Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005 — Domaine Armand Rousseau
This Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005 from Domaine Armand Rousseau brings together the airy finesse of the cru and the depth of a great Burgundy vintage. More vertical than demonstrative, Ruchottes-Chambertin reveals here a Pinot Noir of high distinction, where fruit purity, mineral structure and noble texture form a rare, precise and deeply elegant wine.
Terroir: Ruchottes-Chambertin, altitude, limestone and Gevrey nobility
Located on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru produces wines of great finesse, often marked by a fresh, limestone-driven and chiselled expression. At Armand Rousseau, this terroir offers a particularly pure interpretation of Pinot Noir, less massive than Chambertin, yet remarkable for its detail, length and persistence.
The 2005 vintage is one of the great ageing vintages of modern Burgundy. It brings dense structure, perfectly controlled ripeness and energy that remains very present. Today, the wine is beginning to reveal more evolved complexity, while retaining the intensity, freshness and architecture worthy of the finest Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Nuits.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red evolving towards garnet, brilliant, with remarkable intensity still present for its age.
Nose: noble and complex, with red cherry, morello cherry, ripe raspberry, faded rose, peony, fine spices and liquorice. With aeration, nuances of delicate undergrowth, black tea, fine earth, noble leather and cool stone appear with great subtlety.
Palate: deep, silky and perfectly structured, with fruit that remains precise, noble tannins and mineral freshness that lengthens the wine. The finish is long, floral and lightly spicy, carried by a sensation of purity, limestone tension and great elegance.
96 points — Wine Advocate
Neal Martin highlights the remarkable youth of the wine at the time of tasting, describing an expression that was still closed yet profoundly promising. His review emphasises the purity of the palate, a firm backbone, numerous layers of fruit and outstanding ageing potential, with a suggested drinking window of 2020 to 2040+.
In summary: a Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2005 of great nobility, combining the depth of a major vintage, the mineral finesse of the cru, the elegant signature of Domaine Armand Rousseau and first-class critical recognition.
