In Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau embodies one of Burgundy’s noblest and most sought-after expressions of Pinot Noir. Led by the Rousseau family, the domaine produces deep, precise and age-worthy wines from legendary climats such as Chambertin, Clos-de-Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques and Ruchottes-Chambertin.
Domaine Armand Rousseau — The Legendary Soul of Gevrey-Chambertin
Founded in 1909 in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most prestigious names. A major reference in the Côte de Nuits, it embodies a vision of Pinot Noir built on depth, precision, natural elegance and exceptional ageing potential.
Through legendary climats such as Chambertin, Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques, Ruchottes-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin, the domaine offers a masterful reading of Gevrey-Chambertin. Today, Éric Rousseau and Cyrielle Rousseau continue the family legacy with the same discretion, rigour and respect for place.
A Burgundy of depth, nobility and restraint. Armand Rousseau seeks wines that express each climat with precision: pure fruit, distinguished structure, silky tannins, limestone freshness and great length. The style never relies on demonstration, but on balance, clarity and the ability of the wines to reveal themselves with time.
History: a family domaine turned Burgundian legend
The story of the domaine began in 1909, when Armand Rousseau founded the estate in Gevrey-Chambertin. Very early on, he acquired prestigious parcels and understood the importance of estate bottling, a practice still uncommon in Burgundy at the time.
The acquisition of major climats such as Charmes-Chambertin, Chambertin and Clos de la Roche laid the foundations of an exceptional vineyard patrimony. The domaine was also among the Burgundy producers that quickly developed an international reputation, notably through exports to the United States after Prohibition.
Charles Rousseau later played a major role in building the estate’s worldwide reputation. Today, Éric Rousseau and Cyrielle Rousseau continue this lineage with great fidelity to the family spirit: precise work, discretion, respect for the climats and refusal of stylistic excess.
Terroir: the great climats of Gevrey-Chambertin
The domaine covers around 15 hectares, mainly in Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis, with a remarkable proportion of Premiers Crus and Grands Crus. Its holdings include some of Burgundy’s most sought-after climats.
Among the Grands Crus are Chambertin, Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes, Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche. The domaine also owns major Premiers Crus, including Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques and Lavaux Saint-Jacques.
The limestone and clay-limestone soils of Gevrey-Chambertin give the wines a rare combination of depth, structure and freshness. Each climat brings its own nuance: Chambertin offers authority and longevity, Clos-de-Bèze greater refinement, Ruchottes a more tense and chiselled expression, and Clos Saint-Jacques an almost Grand Cru-like harmony.
Expression of place: Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambertin, Clos-de-Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Pinot Noir, limestone soils, red and black fruits, fine spices, floral notes and noble structure.
Rousseau signature: deep, distinguished and long-built wines, with silky tannins, great aromatic precision, limestone freshness and exceptional ageing capacity.
Viticulture and vinification: precision, gentle extraction and respect for the climats
Domaine Armand Rousseau follows a precise and respectful approach in the vineyard. The soils are carefully worked, yields are controlled and harvesting is carried out by hand. The aim is to pick ripe, balanced grapes capable of faithfully expressing the personality of each climat.
In the cellar, vinification favours gentleness and accuracy. Extractions are measured, fermentations are conducted with precision and the possible use of whole clusters is adapted to the vintage and cuvée. Ageing in oak barrels remains controlled, with new oak used without excess, in order to preserve fruit purity, tannic finesse and terroir expression.
Wine style
The wines of Domaine Armand Rousseau are made exclusively from Pinot Noir. They stand out through a rare alliance between intensity and restraint: deep fruit, silky texture, precise structure, floral notes and great freshness. Even in the most powerful crus, balance remains central.
In youth, the wines often evoke red cherry, black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, violet, rose, fine spices and noble earth. With time, they develop nuances of forest floor, truffle, fine leather, tea leaf, game and dried flowers, while preserving a fresh and long-lasting finish.
Emblematic cuvées
Chambertin Grand Cru: the domaine’s mythical cuvée, deep, intense and majestic, with natural authority and exceptional longevity.
Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru: a more refined and complete expression, combining structure, nobility, fine spices and great complexity.
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru: a more charming and silky Grand Cru, marked by seductive aromatic breadth and fine textural elegance.
Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru: a cuvée of great purity, tense, chiselled and often more mineral and vertical.
Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru: a powerful, spicy and structured wine, marked by deep character and a strong Gevrey identity.
Clos de la Roche Grand Cru: an intense and full-bodied expression of Morey-Saint-Denis, with fine depth and long persistence.
Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques: one of Burgundy’s greatest Premiers Crus, complete, elegant, complex and remarkably balanced.
Lavaux Saint-Jacques Premier Cru: a more tense and expressive wine, marked by fine energy, a fresh frame and a precise finish.
Gevrey-Chambertin Village: a refined introduction to the Rousseau style, with bright fruit, fine purity and an already very Burgundian sense of finesse.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
The wines of Domaine Armand Rousseau are among Burgundy’s great cellar wines. Village wines and Premiers Crus can evolve over 10 to 25 years depending on the vintage, while the Grands Crus, especially Chambertin and Clos-de-Bèze, can last for several decades under good storage conditions.
At the table, these Pinot Noir wines naturally pair with roast poultry, pigeon, duck, veal, lamb, feathered game, mushrooms, truffle, slow-cooked dishes, Burgundian cuisine and mature cheeses. More evolved Grands Crus are best served with refined dishes where their aromatic complexity and silky texture can fully express themselves.
