Château Mouton Rothschild 1956 — Half-bottle
This Château Mouton Rothschild 1956, offered here in half-bottle 0.375 L, is above all a rare and historic collector’s piece. From one of the most emblematic names in Pauillac, this old vintage is valued for its heritage dimension, its exceptional age and its artistic label signed by Pavel Tchelitchew, further reinforcing the interest of the bottle.
Terroir: Pauillac, Médoc depth and the memory of time
Château Mouton Rothschild belongs to the historic great names of Pauillac. Its deep gravel terroir, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, produces wines of structure, density and great persistence, capable in the finest vintages of ageing across decades with remarkable nobility.
The 1956 vintage, now exceptionally old, should be approached with the perspective reserved for heritage bottles. In half-bottle, its interest lies as much in the rarity of the format, the condition, the history of the bottle and the emotion of tasting as in the power of the wine itself. At this stage, each bottle has its own evolution, closely linked to its storage conditions.
A label signed by Pavel Tchelitchew
Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has entrusted the illustration of its label to a different artist for each vintage. For the 1956 vintage, the label was created by Pavel Tchelitchew, a Russian-born artist associated with an expressive, imaginative and deeply personal body of work.
The label of Mouton Rothschild 1956, entitled La Tache de Vin, returns to the theme of the ram, the historic symbol of the estate. This artistic dimension reinforces the collectible character of this half-bottle and makes it sought after by lovers of great wines as well as collectors of Mouton Rothschild labels.
Tasting notes
Appearance: very evolved garnet, with brick, amber or mahogany reflections depending on the condition of the bottle, and an intensity naturally softened by time.
Nose: delicate and tertiary, with old cedar, blond tobacco, fine leather, autumn leaves, noble earth, sweet spices and dried red fruits. Depending on the bottle’s evolution, nuances of cigar box, undergrowth, discreet truffle and black tea may appear.
Palate: supple, melted and fully softened by age, carried more by aromatic finesse, the memory of the terroir and tertiary charm than by power. The finish remains subtle, with cedar, tobacco, leather, spices and the elegance of an old Médoc wine.
A collector’s half-bottle
More than a classic old Bordeaux, this Château Mouton Rothschild 1956 in half-bottle is aimed at collectors drawn to the history of the estate, old vintages, rare formats and the legendary series of artist labels. Its appeal lies in the meeting of a great Pauillac name, a now very rare vintage, a patrimonial format and a graphic work that fully contributes to the identity of the bottle.
In summary: a rare and patrimonial half-bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild 1956, sought after for its age, Bordeaux prestige, collectible format and label signed by Pavel Tchelitchew, as much as for the singular emotion of a very old Pauillac.
Food pairings: best enjoyed in a contemplative tasting, with delicate and restrained dishes: roast poultry, mushrooms, truffle, aged Comté, refined cuisine with reduced jus, or served at the end of a meal to fully appreciate the historic character of the bottle.
