Château Latour 1998 — Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé
This Château Latour 1998 is a deeply classical Pauillac, produced in a vintage that was more uneven on Bordeaux’s Left Bank than on the Right Bank. Less spectacular than some of Latour’s greatest years, it nevertheless expresses the estate’s identity with seriousness: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel soils, cassis, cedar, liquorice, forest floor, tannic structure and a mineral finish.
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Latour is renowned for wines of contained power, longevity and architectural precision. The 1998 is not the most expansive Latour, but it carries true nobility of terroir: a wine of tension, restraint and structure, deeper than it is seductive, now entering a fine phase of maturity.
A firm, dark and earthy Latour, marked by cassis, cedar, walnut, liquorice, pencil lead, tobacco, forest floor and a strong mineral imprint. The wine is less broad through the mid-palate than the legendary vintages, yet it retains the backbone, depth and discreet persistence of great Pauillac.
Terroir: the Enclos of Latour, poor gravel and clay subsoil
Latour’s great terroir is based on very poor gravel soils, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. These gravels force the vine to drive its roots deep in search of water and nutrients in the clay subsoil. This natural constraint gives the wine its concentration, colour, tannic structure and outstanding ageing potential.
In Pauillac, the balance between draining gravel, deep clay and the influence of the Gironde estuary allows Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly while preserving tension and structure. In the 1998, this terroir gives a straight, mineral and compact expression: cassis, black fruits, cedar, graphite, liquorice, tobacco, earth and still-present tannins.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cassis, black fruits, cedar, liquorice, graphite, tobacco and mineral structure.
Latour signature: compact architecture, firm tannins, dark depth, noble austerity and great persistence.
Tasting notes
Appearance: dark garnet with evolved purple reflections, still dense and serious, with a visual depth that recalls the natural concentration of Latour’s terroir. Brick-toned hints are beginning to underline its evolution without diminishing the wine’s presence.
Nose: complex, classical and slightly austere, with cassis, black fruits, forest floor, cedar, walnut, liquorice, pencil lead, tobacco, black tea, earth, roasted herbs and a smoky touch. Some tasting notes also evoke noble game, Morello cherry and a strongly marked mineral character.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, structured, firm and straight. The tannins remain present, sometimes slightly strict, but they support a wine of real poise. Black fruit mingles with liquorice, cedar, tobacco and earth, leading to a long, mineral and persistent finish. The mid-palate is less expansive than in the very greatest Latour vintages, but the whole retains great seriousness and nobility.
Fruit: cassis, black fruits, blackberry, Morello cherry, ripe but restrained fruit.
Evolution: forest floor, cedar, walnut, tobacco, black tea, smoky notes, noble game.
Terroir: graphite, pencil lead, earth, liquorice, minerality, firm tannins and a persistent finish.
Overall impression: classical, serious and compact Latour, more mineral and structured than voluptuous.
Expression of the 1998 vintage
The 1998 vintage was more favourable to Bordeaux’s Right Bank than to the Left Bank, but the great terroirs of Pauillac produced serious, structured and age-worthy wines. At Latour, the result is not a spectacular or immediately seductive wine: it is a dense, straight, moderately tannic 1998 marked by a certain noble austerity.
Today, Château Latour 1998 is entering an interesting phase of maturity. It can be enjoyed now, especially by lovers of classical, firm and mineral Pauillac. A well-preserved bottle will offer cassis, cedar, tobacco, forest floor, liquorice and a long earthy finish. Aeration should remain measured: open, taste, then decide whether a gentle decanting is needed only to remove sediment.
In summary: a classical, firm and mineral Château Latour, less opulent than the legendary great years, yet carried by the strength of Pauillac terroir.
Dominant aromas: cassis, black fruits, cedar, forest floor, walnut, liquorice, pencil lead, tobacco, black tea, earth, graphite and a mineral finish.
