Bérêche & Fils Le Cran 2017 — Ludes Premier Cru Extra Brut
Bérêche & Fils Le Cran 2017 is a rare single-vineyard Champagne from Ludes Premier Cru, on the Montagne de Reims. Made from equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this vintage cuvée expresses the chalky, vinous and deeply gastronomic character of one of the most sought-after grower estates in contemporary Champagne.
In the demanding 2017 vintage, Bérêche has produced a Champagne of character, driven by the limestone freshness of the slope, fine mousse, marked salinity and an already complex aromatic profile. Its late disgorgement in July 2024 and Extra Brut dosage of around 3 g/L preserve the wine’s purity while highlighting its texture, relief and length.
Terroir
Le Cran comes from old vines planted on the Cran de Ludes, notably the lieux-dits Les Hautes Plantes for Chardonnay and Les Vignes Saint Jean for Pinot Noir. These parcels are rooted in poor, highly calcareous soils, where chalk lies close beneath the surface. This origin gives rise to a Champagne that is taut, textured and intensely mineral, with a structure that naturally extends the finish.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale gold with luminous reflections, animated by a fine and persistent mousse.
Nose: expressive aromas of ripe pear, apricot, yellow apple, dried flowers, chamomile and gentle spices, with nuances of rye bread, toasted hazelnut, exotic fruit and a slightly reductive touch that adds depth.
Palate: generous, direct and savoury on the attack, carried by lively acidity and pronounced salinity. The palate is ample yet well defined, with a long, chalky and delicately spicy finish combining yellow fruit, citrus, toasted notes and persistent minerality.
Expert reviews
93/100 – Antonio Galloni, Vinous: the critic describes Le Cran 2017 as slightly more open in this release, yet highly successful in a challenging vintage, with notes of apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, spice, tropical fruit and a touch of reduction.
92/100 – Kristaps Karklins, The Wine Advocate: the review highlights an expressive Champagne made from equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, marked by pear, honeysuckle, rye bread, toasted nuts and a generous, lively and saline palate.
92/100 – James Suckling: a solid score for this Ludes Premier Cru cuvée, recognising an expressive, charming and well-built Champagne despite the challenges of the 2017 vintage.
Expression of the vintage
The 2017 vintage was a delicate year in Champagne, particularly for Pinot Noir, yet Le Cran retains a fine sense of coherence thanks to the quality of the old vines, the strength of the chalky terroir and the balance of the blend. The wine is less crystalline than in the most classical years, but gains in immediate charm, aromatic generosity and savoury expression. It can be enjoyed now, while retaining an interesting ageing potential into the early 2030s.
In summary: a rare and sought-after Premier Cru Champagne, rated 93/100 by Vinous, from the chalky slope of Ludes. Le Cran 2017 offers an expressive, saline and gastronomic profile, in a more open and charming style than the most austere vintages.
Food pairings: oven-roasted fish, turbot with lemon butter, langoustines, Bresse poultry, mushroom risotto, aged Comté, refined dishes built around dried fruits or delicately creamy preparations.
