Bérêche & Fils Le Cran 2018 — Ludes Premier Cru Extra Brut
Bérêche & Fils Le Cran 2018 is one of the most sought-after single-vineyard cuvées from this emblematic grower Champagne house in Ludes. Sourced from two Premier Cru lieux-dits on the Montagne de Reims, this vintage Champagne expresses the meeting point between Pinot Noir depth and the chalk-driven energy of Chardonnay.
In the 2018 vintage, Chardonnay plays a more prominent role than usual in the blend, bringing a particularly luminous, floral and vertical dimension. The Extra Brut dosage, measured at 3.85 g/L, highlights the purity of the wine, while extended ageing on lees adds texture, depth and impressive persistence.
Terroir
Le Cran comes from two parcels in Ludes Premier Cru: Les Hautes Plantes for Chardonnay and Les Vignes Saint Jean for Pinot Noir. These slopes are rooted in poor, highly calcareous soils where chalk strongly shapes the structure of the wine. This origin gives rise to a Champagne that is vinous, precise and deeply mineral, with an energy that carries the palate and supports its ageing potential.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous golden colour, bright and clear, with a fine and regular mousse.
Nose: expressive aromas of ripe apple, apricot, candied citrus, yellow flowers, fresh mint and gentle spices, followed by nuances of vanilla, hazelnut, fine brioche and a subtle touch of oak still integrating.
Palate: broad, precise and energetic on the attack. The wine shows deep substance, delicate bubbles, chalky freshness and a fine saline tension. The finish is long, savoury and structured, lingering on yellow fruit, citrus, fine spices and chalk.
Expert review
95/100 – Antonio Galloni, Vinous: the critic highlights a particularly compelling Le Cran 2018, marked by notes of apple tart, apricot, mint, yellow flowers, vanilla and French oak. He also underlines the more assertive role of Chardonnay in this vintage, representing 60% of the blend, as well as the need for a little more time for the oak influence to become fully integrated.
Expression of the vintage
The 2018 vintage gives Le Cran a ripe, ample and highly expressive profile, without losing the linearity that defines the great chalky terroirs of Ludes. The wine already shows strong aromatic intensity, yet its balance suggests a very promising evolution. A few more years in the cellar will allow the oak, fruit and pastry notes to integrate further, while developing more complex nuances of dried fruit, candied citrus, damp chalk and fine spices.
In summary: a rare single-vineyard Champagne from Bérêche & Fils, sourced from Ludes Premier Cru and rated 95/100 by Vinous. Le Cran 2018 combines Pinot Noir structure with a more pronounced Chardonnay brightness, in a deep, chalky, gastronomic style built for ageing.
Food pairings: roasted lobster, langoustines, turbot with lemon butter, Bresse poultry, mushroom risotto, aged Comté, refined dishes with white truffle or noble fish in a light sauce.
