Châteauneuf-du-Pape Arioso 2017 — Rotem & Mounir Saouma

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Arioso 2017 from Rotem & Mounir Saouma offers a rare, profound and singularly refined interpretation of the appellation. Far from being a simply sun-drenched Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Arioso expresses a purer, more delicate and almost Burgundian vision of Grenache, with great aromatic intensity, an ample texture and a remarkably long finish.

Terroir: parcel-selected Grenache, northern sands and Châteauneuf finesse

Arioso is a confidential parcel selection of Grenache, sourced from sandy terroirs in the northern part of the appellation. These soils favour a finer, more lifted and more perfumed expression of the grape, with a less massive texture than wines from the more clay-rich or stony sectors of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Fermented with whole clusters, then aged for 24 months without racking or filtration, the wine preserves remarkable fruit purity and great textural precision. The 2017 vintage brings intensity, depth and ripeness, yet the approach of Rotem & Mounir Saouma favours delicacy, slow ageing, tannic harmony and a clear expression of place above all.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep, brilliant magenta, with a visual intensity that suggests a dense, vibrant wine still full of youth.

Nose: precise, intense and highly expressive, with raspberry, wild blackberry, ripe red fruit, candied flowers, exotic spices, lavender and fine earthy nuances. With aeration, touches of spice cake, garrigue, sweet pepper and dried herbs add further complexity.

Palate: ample, deep and enveloping, with generous substance held in perfect balance. Red and dark fruits mingle with floral, spicy and lightly earthy notes, in an equilibrium that combines power and delicacy. The finish is very long, floral, spicy and harmonious, supported by fine tannins.

Expert review

94–97/100 — Vinous

Vinous describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Arioso 2017 from Rotem & Mounir Saouma as a wine of great aromatic intensity, with a deep, brilliant magenta colour. The review highlights precise aromas of raspberry, wild blackberry, candied flowers, exotic spices and fine earthy nuances. The palate is ample, deep and highly expressive, carried by red and dark fruits, notes of spice cake and lavender. The whole combines power and delicacy, with a very long, spicy and floral finish supported by fine, harmonious tannins.

An almost Burgundian expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Through its parcel origin, sandy terroirs, whole-cluster vinification and long ageing without aggressive intervention, Arioso clearly stands apart from more classical expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine retains the breadth and depth of the southern Rhône, but with a more chiselled, floral and tactile reading of Grenache, in a deeply singular style.

In summary: a rare, intense and refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017, sourced from a confidential parcel selection of Grenache on sandy terroirs, fermented with whole clusters and aged for a long period without racking or filtration. A pure, profound and almost Burgundian expression of the appellation.

Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, rib of beef, duck with sweet spices, pigeon, lamb tagine, confit vegetables, Provençal cuisine with garrigue herbs, truffle-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
