Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL 2016 — Domaine de la Janasse
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL 2016 from Domaine de la Janasse is an exceptional cuvée, produced in very limited quantities and only under particularly favourable conditions. Made from grapes of remarkable concentration, it reveals extraordinary richness, depth and complexity, while preserving the outstanding balance of the 2016 vintage.
Terroir: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, exceptional Grenache and ageing depth
Cuvée XXL represents one of the rarest and most ambitious expressions from Domaine de la Janasse. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it highlights a selection of very ripe and concentrated grapes, with Grenache as the dominant variety, complemented depending on the blend by the traditional grapes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The 2016 vintage brings a major balance between ripeness, freshness, depth and refined tannins. With a significant proportion of whole clusters and ageing in demi-muids, this cuvée stands out for its intensity, but also for a precision and elegance that go far beyond mere power.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep red with purple and garnet reflections, dense, brilliant and very sustained, with an intensity that announces a wine of great concentration.
Nose: deep and noble, with ripe raspberry, dark fruits, stone fruits, crushed rock, pencil lead, sweet spices, garrigue and fine leather. With aeration, nuances of liquorice, pepper, dried herbs, cocoa and warm earth may appear.
Palate: full, ample and deeply layered, with impressive substance yet perfect control. The wine combines structure, firm and noble tannins, balancing freshness and remarkable length. Despite its name XXL, it impresses as much through finesse, elegance and precision as through intensity.
100/100 — Wine Advocate
Joe Czerwinski describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL 2016 from Domaine de la Janasse as an exceptional cuvée, produced only for the second time after the 2007 vintage. His review highlights a blend largely dominated by Grenache, with a significant proportion of whole clusters and ageing in demi-muids. The wine reveals noble aromas of crushed rock, pencil lead, sweet spices, ripe raspberry and stone fruits. The palate is full, ample and deeply layered, but above all remarkable for its finesse, elegance and length. Despite its name XXL, it impresses more through balance and precision than through sheer power.
Expression of the 2016 vintage
The 2016 vintage gives this cuvée an exceptional dimension: concentration, freshness, ripe tannins, length and harmony. The wine’s natural power is balanced by a precise framework and an energy that give it impressive ageing potential. With time, it should develop deeper nuances of fine leather, dried garrigue, melted spices, blond tobacco, cocoa, Mediterranean undergrowth and minerality.
In summary: a mythical and extremely rare cuvée from Domaine de la Janasse, awarded 100 points by Wine Advocate and produced only for the second time after 2007. A deep, ample and masterful Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016, impressive for its concentration, but above all for its balance, elegance and precision.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb with herbs, game, pigeon, Provençal beef stew, lamb tagine, truffle-based cuisine, dishes with garrigue herbs, confit vegetables or mature hard cheeses.
