In Barbaresco and Castiglione Falletto, Roagna embodies one of Piedmont’s most uncompromising expressions of traditional Nebbiolo. Old vines, historic crus, long macerations and patient ageing give rise to wines of rare purity, depth and longevity.
Roagna — Barbaresco & Barolo
Roagna stands among the great historic names of Piedmont, with deep roots in Barbaresco and an equally prestigious presence in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo. The estate is admired for a vision of Nebbiolo that remains profoundly traditional: precise, restrained, long-lived and uncompromisingly faithful to place.
Today, Luca Roagna continues the family’s work with the same respect for old vines, natural balance and slow cellar practices. Nothing is rushed: the wines are built through time, patience and observation, revealing the noble austerity, perfume and mineral depth that define great Nebbiolo.
Historic vineyards and great crus
The identity of Roagna is inseparable from its exceptional vineyard heritage. In Barbaresco, the estate works emblematic sites such as Pajè, Asili and Montefico, each bringing its own nuance of finesse, altitude, floral lift and mineral tension. Crichet Pajè, produced from a tiny selection of old vines, remains one of the rarest and most sought-after wines in Piedmont.
In Barolo, the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto gives a deeper, more structured expression of Nebbiolo, marked by calcareous clay soils, firm architecture and remarkable ageing potential. Across these historic parcels, old vines and low yields are central to the estate’s natural concentration and precision.
Viticulture and cellar work
Roagna’s approach is artisanal and deeply respectful of life in the vineyard. Biodiversity, natural ground cover, severe selection and minimal intervention guide the work, with the aim of preserving the clearest possible expression of each cru.
In the cellar, the wines follow a deliberately slow and traditional path: indigenous yeasts, extended macerations, gentle extraction and long ageing in large neutral vessels. This patient method shapes wines of structure and transparency, where power is never forced and elegance comes through restraint.
Wine style
Roagna wines are not immediate or demonstrative. They are vertical, complex and deeply layered, with aromas of dried rose, red cherry, wild herbs, spice, tar and mineral earth. The tannins are finely drawn yet serious, the acidity vibrant, and the finish often remarkably long.
Their greatest quality is their capacity to age. With time in bottle, the top crus gain depth, perfume and textural refinement, becoming wines of meditation as much as gastronomy.
