Barolo Pira 2017 — Roagna
The Barolo Pira 2017 from Roagna offers a deep, serious and deliberately restrained expression of Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto. In a warm vintage, the estate preserves its signature style: dense but measured fruit, noble tannins, savoury intensity and a precise reading of the cru.
Still young, this Barolo is built more on depth and structure than immediate charm. Black cherry, morello cherry, dried herbs, liquorice, fine leather and incense shape a powerful, elegantly austere wine for lovers of age-worthy Nebbiolo.
Terroir and winemaking
The Pira cru, located in Castiglione Falletto, is one of the historic terroirs of Barolo. Its setting gives Nebbiolo a structured expression, combining perfume, density and lasting presence.
Roagna works in a traditional spirit, with massal selection vines, careful attention to soil life and long ageing. The aim is not immediate impact, but a wine that develops slowly, with firm substance and a clear sense of place.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet reflections, bright and still youthful.
Nose: dark and refined, with black cherry, morello cherry, dried herbs, liquorice, fine leather, incense and spice. With air, floral, earthy and lightly blood-orange nuances emerge.
Palate: powerful, firm and deeply savoury, carried by tight yet high-quality tannins. The finish is long, mineral, slightly austere and very persistent.
93/100 — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Antonio Galloni describes this Barolo as a powerful, intensely savoury and still reserved wine, marked by black cherry, herbs, leather, incense and liquorice. He highlights its weight, presence and ageing potential, with an indicative drinking window around 2025–2037.
The 2017 vintage and ageing potential
The 2017 vintage was warm and dry in Piedmont, producing concentrated and structured Barolo wines. At Roagna, this natural richness remains shaped by the estate’s style: measured extraction, patient ageing and a search for long-term balance.
This wine deserves further cellaring so that its tannins can soften and its Nebbiolo character can evolve towards fine leather, dried flowers, tobacco, truffle and spice. Serve at around 16 to 17°C, with gradual opening rather than excessive decanting.
Key points: a great age-worthy Barolo from Roagna, sourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto, rated 93 points by Vinous, with black cherry, liquorice, dried herbs, fine leather, firm structure and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: white truffle risotto, tajarin with mushrooms, brasato al Barolo, braised beef cheek, roast lamb, feathered game, ossobuco, aged parmesan or mature pecorino.
