Maison Romane – Oronce de Beler

Living Burgundy wines: purity, energy and artisanal precision

History & identity

Maison Romane is the project of Oronce de Beler, a passionate advocate of natural Burgundy wines and one of the region’s most distinctive micro-négociants. After leaving Paris, he settled in Vosne-Romanée, trained in Beaune, and gained experience in several family estates. His work with horse ploughing across the Côte d’Or shaped his intimate connection with the vineyards. The first cuvées were born in 2005, and the estate later moved to Nuits-Saint-Georges, where a vaulted cellar now hosts the entire production. Maison Romane has since become a cult name among enthusiasts of natural, terroir-driven Burgundies.

Terroirs & sourcing

Maison Romane operates primarily as a micro-négociant, sourcing grapes from trusted growers in the Côte de Nuits and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. These vineyards are farmed organically, biodynamically, or with highly sustainable viticultural practices. Soils are classic Burgundy: limestone-rich clays, marls, stony slopes, and cooler exposures at higher altitudes in the Hautes-Côtes. All fruit is harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting at the vine and in the cellar to ensure pristine quality — the cornerstone of the Maison Romane identity.

Winemaking philosophy

Oronce de Beler embraces a minimal-intervention, natural winemaking approach. Grapes are vinified in whole clusters, encouraging aromatic lift, structure and complexity. Fermentations rely entirely on native yeasts, with gentle extraction: remontage and pigeage are used sparingly and only when needed.

Sulphur use is extremely low or absent, depending on the cuvée and the vintage. Wines are aged for around 12 months in old barrels, chosen specifically to avoid any overt oak influence. No fining, no filtration, and often manual bottling with wax capsules — all signatures of Maison Romane’s artisanal ethos.

Wine style

Maison Romane wines are celebrated for their vibrancy, purity and digestibility. The reds show expressive red and black fruit, floral notes, supple textures, and fine tannins. A distinctive saline, energetic backbone and remarkable drinkability define the style, while the best cuvées also offer surprising depth and ageing potential. These are wines crafted for lovers of fine natural Burgundy, prioritising finesse and emotion over power.

Key cuvées

Depending on vintage and sourcing, Maison Romane produces several highly sought-after small-batch cuvées:

  • Bourgogne Rouge – Pure, juicy Pinot Noir with immediate charm and bright red fruit.
  • Hautes-Côtes de Nuits – Fresh, aerial wines marked by altitude, limestone tension and clarity.
  • Côte de Nuits-Villages – Deeper structure and length, offering a step up in complexity and ageing ability.
  • Single-vineyard selections (Marsannay, Comblanchien, etc.) – Micro-cuvées showcasing distinct terroir expression.

All wines are produced in deliberately small quantities, contributing to their rarity and desirability among collectors and Burgundy natural wine enthusiasts.

Positioning & identity

With its artisanal approach, micro-volumes and uncompromising commitment to purity, Maison Romane stands as one of the most distinctive names in the landscape of high-end natural Burgundy. The wines combine classical Côte de Nuits elegance with a contemporary, living-wine philosophy — a combination that has earned Maison Romane a cult following among connoisseurs and top sommelier programs worldwide.
