In Blagny, on the high slopes between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey produces rare, precise and deeply mineral wines. Led by Hélène and Laurent Martelet, the sixth generation of winegrowers, the domaine reveals the great high-altitude terroirs of the Côte de Beaune through saline, taut and elegant Chardonnays, as well as refined hillside Pinot Noirs.
Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey — The Mineral Purity of Blagny’s High Slopes
Located in the hamlet of Blagny, on the high slopes between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey is one of the most discreet and sought-after signatures of the Côte de Beaune. Led by Hélène and Laurent Martelet, representing the sixth generation of winegrowers, the domaine highlights rare high-altitude terroirs capable of producing wines of great tension, remarkable purity and deeply Burgundian elegance.
Since the late 1990s, Hélène and Laurent Martelet have developed this family heritage with an artisanal, precise and patient approach. The wines are defined by their balance between ripeness, freshness and mineral length. The whites, mainly made from Chardonnay, express the limestone finesse of Blagny, while the rare Pinot Noir reds offer a delicate and vibrant reading of the same hillside terroirs.
A Burgundy of altitude, precision and quiet minerality. Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey seeks straight, saline and luminous wines, where Chardonnay expresses the freshness of the high slopes between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. The style favours purity, elegance, length and a patient reading of terroir rather than immediate opulence.
History: a family domaine rooted in Blagny
Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey is intimately linked to the hamlet of Blagny, a high-altitude sector long more confidential than the neighbouring great villages of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. This singular position gives the domaine a distinctive identity: a cooler, more vertical Burgundy, deeply marked by slope, limestone and slow grape ripening.
Hélène and Laurent Martelet have gradually shaped a highly coherent style, based on precision of gesture and respect for the vine. The domaine is certified in organic farming, with particular attention paid to the ecosystem, heritage and the revelation of the terroirs of the Hameau de Blagny.
The rarity of the cuvées, the quality of the terroirs and the domaine’s precise style explain the growing interest these bottles attract among Burgundy lovers. Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey now stands as one of the most refined expressions of the high slopes of Blagny.
Terroir: the high slopes between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet
The domaine works vines located on the slopes of Blagny, at around 350 metres altitude. These parcels rest on poor, well-draining clay-limestone soils, favouring a taut, fine and mineral expression of Chardonnay.
Altitude plays an essential role here. It slows ripening, preserves natural acidity and gives the wines a very recognisable hillside energy. The old vines, often several decades old, bring depth, concentration and complexity without ever weighing down the balance.
The domaine’s appellations reflect this unique position between two great villages of the Côte de Beaune: Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Hameau de Blagny, Meursault-Blagny Premier Cru La Genelotte and Blagny Premier Cru La Genelotte in red. Each cuvée offers a different interpretation of these high-altitude terroirs.
Expression of place: Blagny, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, high-altitude slopes, clay-limestone soils, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, citrus fruit, white flowers, stone fruits, salinity and mineral length.
Comtesse de Chérisey signature: rare, precise, straight and saline wines, marked by high-slope freshness, great aromatic purity and a very Burgundian elegance of texture.
Viticulture and vinification: artisanal precision and patience in the cellar
The domaine practises careful viticulture, certified in organic farming, based on manual work, soil observation and respect for the natural rhythm of the vine. Interventions remain measured, with a constant search for precise ripeness, fruit purity and balance.
Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, in order to preserve the identity of each climat. For the whites, fermentation takes place in barrels, followed by long ageing on fine lees. This patience brings texture, depth and complexity without masking the natural tension of the wines.
Ageing remains precise and measured. Oak supports the wine without dominating Chardonnay: it brings structure, poise and a light patina, while allowing the salinity, freshness and mineral finesse of the Blagny terroir to shine through.
Wine style
The white wines of Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey are straight, saline, floral and intensely mineral. They express aromas of citrus fruit, ripe lemon, pear, white peach, white flowers, warm stone, fine hazelnut and sometimes subtle buttery notes with age.
On the palate, the wines stand out for their tension, length and balance between substance and freshness. They may appear discreet in youth, but gain depth, complexity and breadth after a few years in bottle.
The domaine’s rare red wines, made from Pinot Noir, offer a fine and vibrant expression of Blagny: bright red fruit, floral notes, delicate tannins, hillside freshness and a clean finish.
Emblematic cuvées
Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Hameau de Blagny: a cuvée of great purity, marked by tension, minerality and floral elegance. A fresh and slender expression of Puligny from the high slopes of Blagny.
Meursault-Blagny Premier Cru La Genelotte: a broader and more textured wine, combining the natural richness of Meursault with the high-altitude freshness of Blagny. Fine complexity, saline length and strong ageing potential.
Blagny Premier Cru La Genelotte red: a rare, fine and floral Pinot Noir, carried by delicate structure, precise fruit and very elegant hillside freshness.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
The white wines of Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey have fine ageing potential. The great Meursault-Blagny and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru cuvées can evolve for 8 to 15 years, sometimes longer in great vintages. With time, they gain complexity, texture and nuances of dried fruit, fine butter and deeper minerality.
At the table, these wines pair beautifully with noble fish, shellfish, langoustines, creamy poultry dishes, mushroom risotto, beurre blanc sauces, mature Burgundy cheeses and delicately truffled dishes. The red wines of Blagny pair with roast poultry, veal, duck, mushrooms and refined Burgundian cuisine.
