Château Sociando-Mallet – The Quiet Power of the Haut-Médoc
Located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of Pauillac, Château Sociando-Mallet has, over the past several decades, earned its reputation as one of the greatest unclassified wines of the Médoc. Combining restrained power, classical Bordeaux elegance and unwavering respect for its terroir, the estate regularly rivals the most prestigious classified growths.
Founded in the 17th century and revived in 1969 by Jean Gautreau, the estate has been under the direction of his daughter Sylvie Gautreau and grandson Arthur since 2019, continuing the same uncompromising pursuit of quality.
An exceptional terroir overlooking the Garonne
The vineyard covers 83 hectares in production out of a total of 110 hectares, perched on a gravelly rise overlooking the Garonne estuary. The Gunzian gravel soils resting on a clay-limestone subsoil ensure natural drainage and contribute to the estate’s signature finesse.
- Grape varieties: 55% Merlot – 40% Cabernet Sauvignon – 5% Cabernet Franc
- Planting density: 8,333 vines/ha
- Average vine age: 35 years
This patchwork of soils combined with the river’s influence creates a unique microclimate that encourages steady ripening and precise varietal expression.
Viticulture & vinification
The estate practices sustainable viticulture that respects natural balances. Harvesting is manual, with no systematic destemming or green harvesting, preserving the character of each vintage.
- Fermentation in thermo-regulated stainless steel or concrete vats, vinified parcel by parcel
- Ageing for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels, about 95% new for the Grand Vin
- Precise blending focused on tension, density and aromatic clarity
