Jean Foillard – Morgon “3.14” 2018

An iconic Beaujolais cuvée from very old vines on the Côte du Py, offering depth, volcanic minerality, and a structure reminiscent of great red Burgundies.

Terroir & Winemaking

The 3.14 cuvée comes from the domaine’s oldest vines, located on the renowned Côte du Py, the historic heart of Morgon. This unique volcanic terroir, composed of decomposed schist, granite sands, and manganese-rich soils, gives the wine remarkable depth, dark mineral character, and excellent aging potential.

A leading figure in Beaujolais’ natural wine movement, Jean Foillard farms organically and minimizes intervention in the cellar: hand harvesting, whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, aging in old barrels, and minimal sulfur use. This philosophy preserves the purity of Gamay and the authentic expression of terroir.

Tasting Notes

Nose:
Intense and complex, revealing black cherry, blackberry, and plum, layered with floral notes of violet, hints of smoke, sweet spices, and a subtle warm-stone minerality.

Palate:
Broad and velvety, with a serious structure for Gamay. Fine tannins support flavors of ripe dark fruits, licorice, and spice, carried by a volcanic mineral backbone that adds depth and elegance.

Finish:
Very long and persistent, marked by subtle salinity and spicy notes. With age, the wine evolves toward truffle, leather, and forest floor nuances, enhancing its Burgundian character.
