A leading figure in the qualitative revival of Beaujolais, Jean Foillard has been one of the most precise interpreters of terroir-driven Gamay since the early 1980s. Based in Villié-Morgon, he belongs to the historic “Gang of Four,” alongside Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton, and Jean-Paul Thévenet — pioneering vignerons who championed respectful, low-intervention viticulture.
Inspired by Jules Chauvet, Foillard crafts wines of remarkable purity that reveal the depth of Morgon’s terroirs. His cuvées, sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, demonstrate Beaujolais’ capacity to produce age-worthy wines combining finesse, complexity, and authenticity.
The estate follows sustainable practices close to organic farming, without herbicides or synthetic pesticides. Harvesting is manual, and yields are deliberately controlled to preserve the vine’s natural balance and ensure faithful terroir expression.
Winemaking adheres to Beaujolais tradition: semi-carbonic maceration with whole clusters, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and minimal intervention. Aging takes place in large casks and neutral barrels, with no new oak, preserving aromatic finesse and the silky texture that define the domaine’s style.
The vineyards are located primarily on the renowned Côte du Py, the historic heart of Morgon, along with other respected lieux-dits such as Corcelette. Soils of decomposed granite and schist (“roche pourrie”) contribute finesse, mineral tension, and depth.
Old vines on select parcels provide natural concentration and complexity, enhancing both aging potential and aromatic precision.
Jean Foillard’s wines are renowned for their purity and balance. They offer a precise aromatic profile — cherry, raspberry, violet, and delicate spice — supported by a silky texture and remarkable depth.
Approachable in youth yet capable of graceful evolution in the cellar, they embody a timeless and exacting vision of Morgon Gamay.
Domaine Jean Foillard stands as a benchmark for Beaujolais excellence. With limited production, unwavering respect for terroir, and a style defined by precision and authenticity, the estate is highly sought after by collectors and lovers of fine, age-worthy Gamay.
