Galatrona 2016 – Petrolo (magnum, 1.5 L OWC)
A cult Tuscan Merlot, deep and refined, where ripe fruit meets elegant structure and a persistent mineral finish
Terroir & Winemaking
Produced by Petrolo in Mercatale Valdarno (province of Arezzo), Galatrona is one of Tuscany’s iconic cuvées dedicated to Merlot. The vineyard thrives on hillside soils rich in clay mixed with stony elements (pebbles/rocks), promoting concentration, depth, and fine tannic structure. The altitude and diurnal temperature shifts of Valdarno bring freshness and aromatic precision.
Winemaking focuses on controlled extraction to preserve the grape’s silky texture, followed by oak aging to refine the structure and enhance complexity without masking the fruit. The 2016 vintage, often considered particularly harmonious in Tuscany, **delivers** a wine that is both generous and perfectly balanced. In magnum, evolution is generally slower and more stable, enhancing aging potential.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Intense and noble, with blackberry, black cherry, and plum, lifted by notes of violet, cocoa, sweet spices, and tobacco. A hint of graphite/warm stone emerges with aeration.
Palate:
Full and velvety, driven by dense yet elegant texture. The tannins are fine and enveloping, while freshness carries the wine with precision. Power and balance are beautifully combined.
Finish:
Long, deep, and persistent, with black fruit, spice, and subtle minerality, leaving a sense of depth that calls for aging.
