Tenuta di Petrolo — Tuscan Elegance Between Sangiovese and Great Merlot

Tenuta di Petrolo is one of the most respected estates in contemporary Tuscany. Located in the Val d’Arno di Sopra, between the hills of Chianti and the first foothills of the Apennines, the estate has established itself through wines of great personality, where Sangiovese and Merlot find an expression that is at once profound, refined and deeply rooted in place.

Led by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, and notably by Luca Sanjust, Tenuta di Petrolo has built its reputation around cuvées that have become emblematic: Galatrona, a great Tuscan Merlot, Torrione, a major expression of Sangiovese, and Bòggina, offered in several interpretations of terroir. The estate combines agricultural rigour, organic farming, meticulous selection and a style of rare coherence.

The spirit of the estate

A Tuscany of relief, substance and clarity. Petrolo does not seek concentration alone: its wines favour balance between ripeness, soil energy, velvety touch and varietal expression. Galatrona reveals the nobility of Merlot on Tuscan clays, while Torrione and Bòggina recall the historic depth of Sangiovese in this ancient part of the Valdarno.

History: an ancient estate reinvented by Luca Sanjust

Tenuta di Petrolo has a long history, linked to a hill occupied since antiquity and dominated by the medieval tower of Galatrona. The property, passed down within the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, gradually turned toward wine production of the highest level, with particular attention paid to the finest slopes and old vines.

Luca Sanjust has played a decisive role in the modern recognition of the estate. From the 1980s and 1990s onward, he undertook a deep reflection on grape varieties, parcels and fruit quality. The Merlot planted at Galatrona became one of the symbols of the estate, while Sangiovese remained central to Petrolo’s Tuscan identity.

This dual reading — great Merlot on one side, terroir-driven Sangiovese on the other — gives Petrolo a singular place among Tuscan estates. The property is not merely defined by the idea of a Super Tuscan: it offers a more nuanced vision, where each wine reflects a parcel, a history and a demanding conception of ripeness.

Terroir: Val d’Arno di Sopra, clay, galestro and alberese

The estate is located in the Val d’Arno di Sopra, a historic area of Tuscany now recognised for its strong qualitative potential. The vines occupy well-exposed slopes, generally between 250 and 450 metres above sea level, in a landscape of woods, olive groves and carefully selected vineyard parcels.

The soils combine clay, galestro, alberese, sandstone and marl depending on the parcel. This diversity gives wines that are ripe, structured and carried by natural mineral energy. The clays of Galatrona are particularly well suited to Merlot, which develops texture, density and great persistence here.

Sangiovese expresses itself through historic parcels such as Bòggina, where old vines produce wines that are long-lined, profound and finely driven. Petrolo’s strength lies in its ability to produce powerful reds that never feel static, with a genuine personality of place.

Expression of place: Val d’Arno di Sopra, Tuscan hills, clay, galestro, alberese, Sangiovese, Merlot, black fruits, ripe cherry, spices, graphite and a long finish.

Petrolo signature: deep, silky, structured and luminous red wines, seeking balance between ripeness, soil energy and textural elegance.

Viticulture and vinification: parcel selection and organic farming

Tenuta di Petrolo is farmed organically, with strong attention paid to biodiversity, soil vitality and yield limitation. The finest parcels are followed carefully in order to obtain concentrated, healthy and balanced grapes, without losing the natural brightness of the fruit.

In the cellar, vinification is carried out by lots and parcels, with strict selection before blending or bottling. Ageing accompanies the richness of the wines without erasing their origin. Petrolo seeks noble textures, polished tannins and a persistence that lets the quality of the vineyard speak.

Wine style

Petrolo wines are defined by controlled density, dark fruit and an enveloping texture. Galatrona offers a majestic expression of Merlot, broad, velvety and highly persistent, yet always supported by a fresh frame and great fruit clarity.

The Sangiovese cuvées, notably Torrione and Bòggina, show a more vertical Tuscany: ripe cherry, spice, floral notes, fine tannins and a dynamic finish. They express a vision that is less demonstrative than profound, capable of ageing with grace and gaining nuance over time.

Emblematic cuvées

Galatrona: the estate’s iconic cuvée, from the vineyard of the same name. A great Tuscan Merlot, profound, velvety, spicy and built for long evolution.

Torrione: the main Sangiovese expression at Petrolo, complemented depending on the vintage by other varieties. An elegant, fruit-driven and structured wine faithful to the estate’s style.

Bòggina A: Sangiovese vinified in amphora, a tribute to the Tuscan tradition of terracotta, with a purer, more tactile and direct expression of the grape.

Bòggina B: barrel-aged Sangiovese, more structured and deeper, from old vines in the Bòggina parcel.

Bòggina C: Tuscan Trebbiano produced in limited quantities, a rare white cuvée of the estate, sought after for its originality and singular reading of local heritage.

Ageing and gastronomic pairings

Great vintages of Galatrona can evolve for 15 to 25 years, sometimes longer in very good conditions. The Sangiovese cuvées also gain complexity after a few years in the cellar, with notes of tobacco, fine leather, dried herbs, spices and candied red fruits.

At the table, Galatrona pairs beautifully with grilled beef, roast lamb, game, duck, slow-cooked dishes, black truffle, mushrooms and mature cheeses. Torrione and Bòggina are particularly well suited to Tuscan cuisine, bistecca alla fiorentina, ragù, wild boar, veal, aged pecorino and dishes with Mediterranean herbs.
