Château Coutet 1998 — Barsac
This Château Coutet 1998 is a great Barsac now showing a beautiful stage of maturity. A Premier Cru Classé of the appellation, Coutet is often distinguished by a fresher, more lifted and more crystalline style than some richer sweet wines, with a signature marked by candied citrus, orange blossom, yellow fruit and natural acidity that carries the finish with elegance.
Terroir: Barsac, limestone freshness and noble botrytis
Located in the heart of Barsac, Château Coutet benefits from limestone and clay-limestone soils that bring remarkable freshness, aromatic precision and a finish that often remains lively despite the richness of the wine. Sémillon plays the central role here, complemented depending on the vintage by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The 1998 vintage, now fully mature, offers an evolved and complex profile, where the richness of botrytis is balanced by a fresh, savoury structure. This is a Barsac for immediate pleasure, ideal for lovers of great sweet wines already beautifully softened by time.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale to medium gold, brilliant, with golden reflections showing the wine’s evolution.
Nose: intense and complex, with lemon zest, crystallised citrus, dried apricot, lanolin, orange blossom, fine honey and crème brûlée. With aeration, nuances of candied fruit, wax, sweet spices and marmalade may appear.
Palate: rich, sweet and ample, yet remarkably fresh. The vivid acidity balances the texture, avoids any heaviness and extends the finish with a savoury, persistent and delicately honeyed impression.
