The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases is located in Saint-Julien, on deep gravel rises close to the Gironde. These poor, well-draining and stony soils favour the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, while allowing the wines to preserve tension, freshness and great precision. The terroir gives structured, deep wines built for very long ageing.

The style of Léoville Las Cases combines the architectural rigour of Cabernet Sauvignon with noble texture and considerable aromatic depth. Cabernet brings cassis, graphite, cedar, tension and structure; the other grape varieties complete the blend with roundness, flesh and complexity. Tasting notes

Appearance: deep purple slowly evolving towards garnet, dense, bright and still very sustained. In magnum, evolution is generally slower, allowing the wine to retain brilliance, intensity and visual depth for many years.

Nose: deep, intense and complex, with cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, ripe black fruits, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa and liquorice. With aeration, nuances of violet, noble spices, sweet pepper, mocha, precious woods, noble earth, black mint, incense and gravel minerality may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, velvety and powerfully structured, with deep black fruit carried by remarkable freshness. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, cocoa, liquorice and spices unfold with intensity, supported by ripe, tight and very noble tannins. The finish is very long, mineral, spicy and persistent, with an impression of controlled power, precision and great Médoc classicism.

Expression of the 2009 vintage

The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux produced ripe, concentrated, generous and highly expressive wines, with marked fruit richness and often sumptuous textures.
