Château Léoville Las Cases 2009 — Saint-Julien

This Château Léoville Las Cases 2009, offered here in an original wooden case of 6 magnums 1.5 L, embodies one of the deepest, most powerful and most masterful expressions of Saint-Julien. A Second Growth of immense prestige, Léoville Las Cases stands out for an architecture close to the greatest Pauillac crus, combining density, precision, structure and aromatic nobility: cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa, liquorice, noble spices, violet, noble earth and a long mineral finish.

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most emblematic estates of the Médoc, renowned for wines of exceptional depth, great structural rigour and remarkable ageing potential. The 2009 vintage, solar, concentrated and generous in Bordeaux, gives here a wine of considerable intensity, while preserving the precision and freshness of the great Saint-Julien terroir. The magnum format and original wooden case reinforce the ageing, collector and prestige dimension of this set.

The spirit of the wine

A great Saint-Julien of power, depth and precision, where the richness of the 2009 vintage remains carried by noble structure and remarkable mineral freshness. The wine combines ripe black fruits, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, cocoa, liquorice, spices and violet, with a dense, velvety, structured and highly persistent palate. The OWC of 6 magnums accentuates its collector character, ageing potential and rarity.

Terroir: Saint-Julien, deep gravel and Médoc precision

The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases is located in Saint-Julien, on deep gravel rises close to the Gironde. These poor, well-draining and stony soils favour the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, while allowing the wines to preserve tension, freshness and great precision. The terroir gives structured, deep wines built for very long ageing.

The style of Léoville Las Cases combines the architectural rigour of Cabernet Sauvignon with noble texture and considerable aromatic depth. Cabernet brings cassis, graphite, cedar, tension and structure; the other grape varieties complete the blend with roundness, flesh and complexity. In the 2009, the ripeness of the vintage reinforces fruit density, while the terroir preserves a fresh, straight and mineral frame.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint-Julien, deep gravel, cassis, blackberry, black plum, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa, violet, noble spices and mineral freshness.

Léoville Las Cases signature: depth, controlled power, noble structure, aromatic precision, tight yet polished tannins, freshness, complexity and very long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep purple slowly evolving towards garnet, dense, bright and still very sustained. In magnum, evolution is generally slower, allowing the wine to retain brilliance, intensity and visual depth for many years.

Nose: deep, intense and complex, with cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, ripe black fruits, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa and liquorice. With aeration, nuances of violet, noble spices, sweet pepper, mocha, precious woods, noble earth, black mint, incense and gravel minerality may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, velvety and powerfully structured, with deep black fruit carried by remarkable freshness. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, cocoa, liquorice and spices unfold with intensity, supported by ripe, tight and very noble tannins. The finish is very long, mineral, spicy and persistent, with an impression of controlled power, precision and great Médoc classicism.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, ripe black fruits, deep dark berries.

Ageing and spices: cedar, cocoa, mocha, precious woods, liquorice, blond tobacco, noble spices, sweet pepper, incense.

Terroir and evolution: graphite, violet, noble earth, black mint, gravel minerality, noble tannins, mineral freshness.

Overall impression: great Saint-Julien, deep, powerful and precise, with velvety texture, masterful structure and a very long mineral finish.

Expression of the 2009 vintage

The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux produced ripe, concentrated, generous and highly expressive wines, with marked fruit richness and often sumptuous textures. In Saint-Julien, the best crus were able to combine this ripeness with great structural freshness, producing deep, balanced wines with exceptional ageing potential.

Today, this Château Léoville Las Cases 2009 in an OWC of 6 magnums remains still young in its evolution and has immense ageing potential. It can already impress through its density, depth and balance after careful aeration, but will gain further complexity with time: cedar, tobacco, fine leather, graphite, truffle, forest floor, melted spices and mineral nuances should gradually join the richness of black fruit.

In summary: a deep, powerful and masterful Château Léoville Las Cases 2009 in an OWC of 6 magnums, driven by the richness of the vintage, the grandeur of Saint-Julien and the rigorous signature of this great Médoc estate.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa, liquorice, violet, noble spices, noble earth and a very long mineral finish.
