Château Léoville Las Cases — The Sovereign Nobility of Saint-Julien

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the greatest names in the Médoc and one of the most respected estates in Saint-Julien. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it is often regarded as one of the closest equivalents to the First Growths, thanks to the consistency of its wines, the depth of its terroir and its immense ageing capacity.

Owned by Domaines Delon, historically linked to the Delon family since the late 19th century, Léoville Las Cases embodies a classical, exacting and aristocratic vision of the Médoc. Long guided by Jean-Hubert Delon, the estate is now entering a new phase with the next generation, notably Arnauld Delon, and a highly precise new winery inaugurated for recent vinifications.

The spirit of the château

A Saint-Julien of great breed, upright, profound and long-lined, where the power of Cabernet Sauvignon is combined with an almost mineral precision. Léoville Las Cases does not seek immediate opulence: it favours structure, freshness, length and a noble texture capable of ageing for several decades.

History: the legacy of the former Léoville estate

The history of Léoville Las Cases is rooted in the former Léoville estate, a vast Médoc property gradually divided after the French Revolution. From this shared origin came the three great Léoville estates of Saint-Julien: Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferré.

Léoville Las Cases today retains one of the most prestigious parts of that heritage, notably through the Grand Clos, a large historic enclosure located in the northern part of the appellation, very close to the border with Pauillac. This position, near the great terroirs of Château Latour, partly explains the power, depth and remarkable uprightness of the Grand Vin.

Terroir: the Grand Clos, at the border of Pauillac

The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases covers around 97 to 98 hectares, but the Grand Vin comes mainly from the finest terroirs of the Clos Léoville Las Cases, also known as the Grand Clos. This block of around 60 hectares occupies an exceptional position in northern Saint-Julien, very close to the Gironde estuary and the great growths of Pauillac.

The soils combine deep gravel, sand, clay and more complex subsoils, providing drainage, deep rooting and natural water regulation. The influence of the Gironde acts as a climatic moderator, limiting temperature extremes and encouraging slow, complete ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, generally around two-thirds of the plantings, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Depending on sources and replanting, proportions are often cited at around 65 to 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19 to 24% Merlot, 9 to 13% Cabernet Franc and a residual share of Petit Verdot.

Terroir expression: Saint-Julien, Grand Clos, deep gravel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Gironde estuary, graphite, cedar, cassis, freshness and mineral tension.

Léoville Las Cases signature: Médoc uprightness, powerful structure, chiselled tannins, precise black fruit, great freshness, graphite length and very long ageing potential.

Viticulture: parcel precision and strict selection

Viticulture at Léoville Las Cases is based on close parcel observation and rigorous grape selection. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with precise sorting, retaining only the lots capable of meeting the exacting style of the Grand Vin.

The château has always sought to preserve the singularity of its great terroirs. This exacting approach is reflected in the separation of the wines: the Grand Vin, mainly from the Grand Clos; Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, the modern second wine; and Clos du Marquis, a distinct Saint-Julien wine from specific parcels, not a simple declassification.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, black plum, fresh black fruits and deep red fruits.

Médoc nuances: graphite, pencil lead, cedar, blond tobacco, violet, liquorice, fine pepper, sweet spices and precious woods.

Evolution and terroir: truffle, fine leather, noble forest floor, cigar box, discreet smoke, warm stone, salinity and polished tannins.

Overall impression: a profound, aristocratic and age-worthy Saint-Julien, combining density, uprightness, freshness and mineral precision.

Vinification and ageing: precision, gravity and long élevage

Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel and lot by lot, in vats adapted to the volumes harvested. The new winery, designed to strengthen vinification precision, allows even finer selection of origins and better adaptation to each vintage.

Harvest: manual, with rigorous sorting and parcel selection.

Vinification: lots vinified separately, with precise extractions adapted to the ripeness of the vintage.

Ageing: generally 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new oak for the Grand Vin.

Philosophy: build an upright, profound and durable wine, without excessive extraction, balancing power, freshness and tannic precision.

Wine style

The style of Château Léoville Las Cases is often described as one of the most “Pauillac-like” expressions of Saint-Julien: strongly Cabernet-driven, structured, profound and graphite-marked, with a firm but noble tannic frame. In youth, the Grand Vin can appear reserved, even austere, but this restraint is one of the signs of its ageing capacity.

With time, great vintages develop remarkable complexity: cedar, tobacco, truffle, cigar box, graphite, black fruits, fine leather and forest floor. Few Saint-Julien wines possess such an ability to evolve for several decades while retaining freshness, tension and noble texture.

Emblematic cuvées

Grand Vin de Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases: the château’s main wine, sourced mainly from the Grand Clos. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, showing depth, structure, graphite, cassis, cedar and a long, upright, mineral finish.

Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases: the château’s modern second wine, created from the 2007 vintage. It offers a more accessible reading of the Las Cases style, with greater suppleness in youth.

Clos du Marquis: a distinct wine produced by Domaines Delon since the early 20th century, from specific Saint-Julien parcels. It should not be considered the second wine of the Grand Vin, but an independent expression of the appellation.

Léoville Las Cases Blanc: a recent white wine project, vinified in the new winery, marking a rare evolution for an estate historically centred on great Saint-Julien reds.

Benchmark vintages

Among the most sought-after vintages of Léoville Las Cases are 1982, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022, depending on stylistic preference and cellaring horizon.

The greatest vintages can evolve for thirty or forty years, sometimes more. Their appeal lies as much in their architecture as in their slow aromatic transformation: black fruit gradually gives way to cedar, tobacco, truffle, graphite and noble forest-floor nuances.
