Château Léoville Las Cases – Saint-Julien
The archetype of the Médoc: power, precision and timeless finesse
Terroir
Located at the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Léoville Las Cases is built upon one of the most exceptional terroirs of the northern Médoc. The estate extends over 95–97 hectares planted on a mosaic of fine gravel mixed with sand and clay, lying above a complex subsoil of marl and limestone. This geological foundation gives the wine its depth, its mineral tension and its unmistakable graphite-driven character.
The grape varieties reflect the classic Médoc identity: a dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate follows a meticulous, parcel-based viticulture with hand harvesting and extremely rigorous sorting. Vinifications are performed plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by long ageing in French oak barrels (mostly new). This level of precision, from vineyard to cellar, builds a style that is dense, refined and majestically structured, capable of ageing gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
A deep, classic and noble expression of Saint-Julien. The bouquet opens with blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum, intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, blond tobacco and sweet spices. With aeration, nuances of truffle, precious woods and a delicate floral touch (violet) emerge, reflecting the purity of great Cabernet Sauvignon.
Palate & Finish:
The palate is both powerfully built and finely sculpted, supported by firm yet elegant tannins wrapped in a dense, deep texture. The mid-palate displays remarkable linearity, a strong mineral backbone (graphite, pencil lead) and exemplary aromatic precision. The finish is very long, unfolding layers of dark fruit, cedar, smoke and spices, all lifted by a freshness that prolongs the wine over many seconds. A monumental Saint-Julien, built for long-term ageing.
Clarification: Clos du Marquis is produced by the Domaines Delon, the same owners as Château Léoville Las Cases. Historically linked to the estate, it is today considered a distinct wine originating from its own dedicated parcels in Saint-Julien, and not the second wine of Léoville Las Cases. The actual second wine of the château is Le Petit Lion.
