Château Angélus 2017 — Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A

This Château Angélus 2017 offers a particularly refined expression of Saint-Émilion. In a vintage defined by precision, freshness and rigorous selection, Angélus delivers a wine focused more on elegance than sheer power, with bright fruit, fine tension and beautifully polished tannins.

Composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 highlights the floral, graphite and spicy dimension of Cabernet Franc, while preserving the flesh, roundness and depth of Merlot. It is a precise, harmonious and already seductive Angélus, yet built to evolve gracefully for many years.

Terroir: Saint-Émilion, limestone, clay and Cabernet Franc precision

Located on the southern slopes of Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus benefits from a terroir combining clay, limestone and gravel, particularly suited to the joint expression of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This complementarity gives the wine its depth, velvety texture and aromatic signature of dark fruit, flowers, spice, graphite and freshness.

The 2017 vintage required great precision in the vineyard. At Angélus, the main parcels were largely spared by frost, allowing the estate to produce a wine of fine aromatic purity, with tight, silky and well-integrated tannins, as well as a fresh and savoury finish.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet red with purple reflections, dense and brilliant, showing the concentration of the fruit and the wine’s still-present youth.

Nose: pure, elegant and expressive, with black cherry, redcurrant jelly, blackberry, blueberry, spiced plum, violet, floral notes, sweet tobacco, graphite, fine herbs, crushed stone and a hint of camphor. With aeration, nuances of cocoa, fine leather, mint and noble spices may appear.

Palate: ample, fresh and highly polished, with precise red and dark fruit, fine yet firm tannins and beautiful tension. The wine is dense without heaviness, elegant without weakness, with a long, graphite-driven, slightly ferrous and persistent finish.

Expert review

97/100 — James Suckling

James Suckling describes Château Angélus 2017 as a wine of great aromatic purity, with a rare level of complexity and refinement for the vintage. His review highlights sweet tobacco, flowers, herbs, stone and an underlying richness of fruit. He notes a full, tight and reserved palate, with an extremely precise tannic feel, great length and a finish full of energy. A highly polished, elegant and beautifully constructed Angélus.

Expression of the 2017 vintage

The 2017 vintage gives Angélus a fresher, more chiselled and more immediately refined profile than some warmer years. The wine favours balance, fruit purity, tannic finesse and aromatic precision. It can already seduce through its elegance, yet its architecture, freshness and depth will allow it to continue evolving in the cellar.

In summary: an elegant, precise and refined Château Angélus 2017, awarded 97 points by James Suckling, marked by black cherry, violet, sweet tobacco, graphite, silky tannins and the freshness of Cabernet Franc.

Food pairings: beef fillet, rack of lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, roast pigeon, truffle risotto, mushrooms, refined slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
