Château Troplong Mondot 2003 — Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Château Troplong Mondot 2003 is a powerful and mature Saint-Émilion from one of the most distinctive vintages of the early 2000s. Marked by exceptional heat and very advanced ripeness, 2003 produced wines of generosity, depth and immediate sensuality, especially on the Right Bank’s finest clay-limestone terroirs.
At Troplong Mondot, the vintage reveals itself in a broad, dark and opulent style, with ripe black fruit, spice, mocha, liquorice and evolved notes beginning to emerge with age. This is a bottle for lovers of mature Bordeaux with richness, texture and personality.
Terroir
Château Troplong Mondot occupies one of the most commanding positions in Saint-Émilion, on a hill overlooking the appellation. Its soils combine deep clay with the limestone foundation so closely associated with the great wines of the area, giving the wine both density and structure.
In a hot and concentrated vintage such as 2003, this limestone influence is especially important. It brings a sense of frame and mineral firmness beneath the wine’s natural richness, helping to balance the generosity of the fruit and the warmth of the year.
Tasting notes
The colour is deep and mature, moving towards dark garnet. The nose is generous and expressive, with aromas of black plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, ripe cherry, liquorice, mocha, tobacco, leather, sweet spice and subtle earthy notes.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and enveloping. The tannins have softened with age, giving a velvety texture, while the finish remains long and intense, carried by ripe dark fruit, cocoa, spice, smoky nuances and a touch of truffle. A mature Saint-Émilion with power, warmth and depth.

Expression of the vintage
The 2003 vintage gives Troplong Mondot a particularly solar and opulent expression. More generous than classical, it favours concentration, ripe fruit and a broad mouthfeel. With more than twenty years of bottle age, the wine now offers a more complex and evolved profile, while retaining the density and force that define the vintage.
Expert review
Robert Parker described the 2003 Troplong Mondot as one of the great successes of the vintage, highlighting the role of the limestone soils, very low yields, opulence, dark fruit, liquorice and full-bodied structure. This confirms the wine’s position as one of the more convincing Right Bank expressions of the hot 2003 vintage.
In summary
A mature, generous and powerful Saint-Émilion from a solar vintage, combining ripe dark fruit, evolved complexity and the limestone structure of one of the appellation’s most recognisable terroirs.
