Échezeaux Grand Cru 2005 — Domaine Louis Jadot
This Échezeaux Grand Cru 2005 from Domaine Louis Jadot embodies a noble, structured and deeply Burgundian interpretation of one of the most emblematic Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits. Located in the world of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échezeaux, Échezeaux produces Pinot Noirs that are perfumed, spicy, fleshy and refined, capable of combining aromatic seduction with genuine ageing depth.
The 2005 vintage, exceptional for red Burgundy, brings here dense substance, great fruit ripeness and serious structure. Today, the wine is beginning to reveal its evolution while retaining remarkable reserve: black cherry, ripe raspberry, dried rose, liquorice, spice, fine leather, undergrowth, dark minerality and still-present tannins shape a Grand Cru that is sensual, profound and built for the long term.
Terroir: Échezeaux, between power and perfume
The Échezeaux climat lies on the slopes of Flagey-Échezeaux, south of Clos de Vougeot, in the continuation of the great terroirs of Vosne-Romanée. Its limestone soils and east / south-east exposure favour wines of fine aromatic intensity, often marked by red and black fruits, spices, faded flowers and subtle minerality.
At Louis Jadot, the destemmed grapes traditionally ferment in vats for several weeks before ageing in oak barrels. This approach aims to preserve the identity of the cru: a Pinot Noir that is both powerful and delicate, with flesh, relief, fine length and the ability to evolve beautifully over several decades in great vintages.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red with garnet reflections, still sustained, with discreet evolution at the rim. The colour reflects both the concentration of the 2005 vintage and the slow evolution of a great age-worthy Pinot Noir.
Nose: expressive, ripe and deeply spicy, with black cherry, preserved raspberry, faded rose, liquorice, fine leather, sweet spices, damp earth and a mineral touch. With aeration, nuances of undergrowth, cocoa, blond tobacco, blood orange, musk and macerated dark fruits may appear.
Palate: ample, concentrated and distinguished, with dense substance, fine sap and tannins that remain structuring while already more integrated. The wine retains remarkable energy, carried by black cherry, ripe red fruits, spices, liquorice and persistent minerality. The finish is long, firm, slightly earthy and very Vosne-like in its perfume.
92(+?)/100 — Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
Stephen Tanzer describes the Échezeaux Grand Cru 2005 from Louis Jadot as a deep red wine marked by very ripe aromas of cherry liqueur and liquorice, powerful, concentrated and savoury, with fine restraint, black cherry flavour, considerable grip and a need for patience. Allen Meadows / Burghound awarded it a range of 91–94/100, highlighting an elegant, spicy and pure nose, ripe red and black fruits, a rich, ample, savoury palate and a velvety finish.
Expression of the 2005 vintage
The 2005 vintage gives this Échezeaux a particularly structured, concentrated and long-lived expression. The great red Burgundies from this year long demanded patience, so imposing were their substance and tannins in youth. After nearly two decades of evolution, this wine is beginning to gain complexity, yet still retains a serious architecture and fine reserve.
Progressive opening is recommended, without aggressive decanting, allowing the wine to relax slowly in the glass. Serving it around 15 to 16°C will help preserve the finesse of Pinot Noir, the brightness of the fruit, the spicy dimension and the emerging tertiary nuances.
In summary: an Échezeaux Grand Cru 2005 from Domaine Louis Jadot, awarded 92(+?) by Stephen Tanzer, from a major Burgundy vintage, marked by black cherry, ripe raspberry, faded rose, liquorice, spice, fine leather, dense substance and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with spices, beef fillet, veal with morels, roast lamb, feathered game, sweetbreads, noble mushrooms, black truffle, aged Comté, mature Époisses or gastronomic cuisine built around reduced jus and earthy notes.
