The 2019 Corton “Le Rognet” Grand Cru from Domaine Taupenot‑Merme presents with a dark garnet core, deep and quite intense. On the nose, initial impressions are tight and restrained: there is a metallic lift (iron / ferrous tone) that gives a sharp edge, which gradually softens to reveal dark red and black fruits — black cherry, blackcurrant, ripe plum — along with cranberry and wild berry notes. Spiced undertones emerge with time: white pepper, cumin or light baking spice (pain d’épices), a hint of citrus peel (perhaps blood orange), and floral notes such as orange blossom. Subtle oak appears in the background: gentle vanilla, a trace of toast, cedar, but always supportive rather than dominant.

On the palate it is medium‑to‑full bodied (with more potential breadth in magnum), tannins firm but relatively fine and supple. The fruit core is intense, predominantly dark berry, but with freshness that avoids heaviness: cranberry acidité, maybe a touch of red fruit brightness in the mid‑palate. There is a well‑balanced interplay of oak, earth/mineral tones, a touch of smokiness or char, and a saline minerality that carries through to the finish. The finish is long, persistent, with savoury and mineral echoes, as well as returning fruit and spice.

In magnum format one can expect the wine to open more slowly, tannins to integrate more gently, and to see tertiary aromas (dried herbs, forest floor, leather, truffe) emerge over a longer period. Drinking window likely begins around 2024‑2026 for some approachability, and can stretch into 2040+ with good cellaring.
