Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2009 — Domaine Ponsot

This Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2009 from Domaine Ponsot, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the most powerful, noble and complex expressions of the hill of Corton. An emblematic Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune, Corton-Bressandes gives Pinot Noir of structure, depth and length, here enhanced by a solar and generous vintage: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, black tea and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s great historic signatures, renowned for wines of character, depth and great longevity. Corton-Bressandes is among the most reputed climats of Corton, capable of producing wines with more structure than many Côte de Beaune crus, while retaining remarkable aromatic finesse. The 2009 vintage brings ripeness, flesh, fruit richness and velvety texture, while the magnum format encourages slow and harmonious evolution.

The spirit of the wine

A great Corton of controlled power, deep, spicy and already complex, where the generosity of the 2009 vintage remains carried by the noble structure of the Bressandes climat. The wine combines ripe red and black fruits, faded flowers, spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor and minerality, with a broad, silky, structured and persistent palate. The magnum format reinforces its ageing dimension, relative freshness and collector character.

Terroir: Corton-Bressandes, depth and nobility of the hill of Corton

The Corton-Bressandes climat lies on the famous hill of Corton, the major red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune. Its clay-limestone soils, marls and stony elements give Pinot Noir a broad, structured and profoundly mineral expression. The cru is distinguished by its ability to combine power, length, spice and earthy complexity.

At Domaine Ponsot, Corton-Bressandes translates into a wine of great presence, capable of ageing for a long time while developing progressive complexity. The terroir brings a firm frame, aromatic depth and a persistent mineral finish. In 2009, the ripeness of the vintage gives more roundness, ripe fruit and density, without erasing the natural structure of the Grand Cru.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Corton-Bressandes, Côte de Beaune, clay, limestone, marl, black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, faded rose, sweet spices, noble earth and persistent minerality.

Domaine Ponsot signature: depth, character, age-worthy structure, terroir expression, ripe fruit, spice, broad texture and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby evolving towards garnet, bright, dense and still well sustained. In magnum, evolution remains slower, with the colour preserving more brilliance, depth and presence than in a standard bottle.

Nose: deep, ripe and progressively complex, with black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, red and black fruits, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice and noble earth. With aeration, nuances of forest floor, fine leather, black tea, cocoa, sweet pepper, fallen leaves, light truffle and limestone minerality may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, silky and still structured, with ripe fruit carried by fine depth. Flavours of black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, plum, spice, liquorice, fine earth, forest floor and leather unfold with generosity, supported by ripe tannins and preserved freshness. The finish is long, mineral, lightly saline and spicy, with an impression of calmed power, nobility and great Burgundian persistence.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, red and black fruits, deep berries.

Flowers and spices: faded rose, violet, sweet spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, black tea, deep Corton perfume.

Evolution and terroir: noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, cocoa, fallen leaves, light truffle, limestone minerality, ripe tannins.

Overall impression: powerful, mature and complex Grand Cru, with silky texture, earthy depth and a long mineral finish.

Expression of the 2009 vintage

The 2009 vintage in Burgundy produced generous, ripe and expressive red wines, with pronounced fruit richness and often velvety textures. In structured great terroirs such as Corton-Bressandes, this ripeness combines with natural framework and persistent minerality, giving dense, deep wines capable of developing over a long period.

Today, this Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2009 in magnum is entering a very interesting phase, between ripe fruit still present and tertiary complexity already perceptible. Measured aeration allows the wine’s depth to unfold without tiring its nuances. With time in the glass, it may gain forest floor, fine leather, truffle, black tea, cocoa, melted spices, noble earth and mineral notes around a core of red and black fruit.

In summary: a deep, generous and structured Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2009 in magnum, driven by the richness of the vintage, the nobility of the climat and the characterful signature of Domaine Ponsot.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, plum, faded rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, black tea, light truffle and a long mineral finish.
