"(...) the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cinsault and Vaccarèse. As the Syrah was aged in wood, there's a hint of campfire smoke here, plus layers of rich, voluptuous plummy fruit. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, this is more concentrated than even the Vieilles Vignes bottling, but it's not that much better in terms of overall quality or longevity."

INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE ESTATE

This was the quintessentially old, rustic style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Clos St-Jean possesses some great vineyards, but the wines were aged entierely too long in old-wood casks.

However, the young Vincent Maurel recently took control and turned things around in one vintage, 2003. Now, brillant wines are made, including the top cuvée, The Deus Ex Machina, the Combe des Fous, and the traditional cuvée.

Clos St. Jean Chateauneuf du Pape is made from 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre, 3% Cinsault, 2% Vaccarese and 1% Muscardin.

Clos St. Jean La Combe des Fous from old vine Grenache planted at the start of the 20th century. The production is only 500 cases per year.

Clos St. Jean Deus ex Machina is made with 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. The production is limited to 500 cases per year.
