Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 — Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot
This Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, expresses one of the most prestigious and majestic terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin. From the mythical cru that embodies the noble power of the Côte de Nuits, it offers a deep, broad and intensely perfumed Pinot Noir: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, cassis, black fruits, rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, cedar, noble earth, graphite and a long mineral finish.
Philippe Charlopin-Parizot is recognised for generous, expressive and sensual wines, with particular attention given to fruit ripeness and textural depth. In Chambertin, this signature meets a terroir of very great authority: the 2017 stands out through a more accessible and luminous expression than some very austere vintages, while preserving the structure, nobility and ageing potential expected from a Grand Cru of this rank. The magnum format further reinforces slow evolution and the wine’s balance.
A Chambertin of great presence, at once rich, perfumed and structured, where the generosity of the Charlopin-Parizot style remains framed by the mineral depth of the Grand Cru. The 2017 combines red and black fruits, flowers, spice, liquorice, cedar, fine earth and graphite, with a broad, silky, straight and persistent palate. It is a wine of nobility, flesh and long ageing potential, enhanced by the magnum format.
Terroir: Chambertin, the noble heart of Gevrey-Chambertin
Chambertin is one of Burgundy’s greatest red Grands Crus, located at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin on a slope with ideal exposure. This historic terroir gives Pinot Noir profound structure, great mineral energy, remarkable aromatic intensity and exceptional ageing capacity. It unites the power of Gevrey with noble grain and length that place the cru at the summit of the Côte de Nuits.
Chambertin’s clay-limestone soils, marls and stones bring density, tension and depth. At Charlopin-Parizot, the terroir translates into a wine that is both fleshy and vertical, marked by ripe black fruit, spice, liquorice, cedar, noble earth and persistent minerality. The 2017 vintage brings more clarity, suppleness and aromatic brightness, without erasing the structure of the Grand Cru.
Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Chambertin, Gevrey-Chambertin, clay, limestone, marl, black cherry, Morello cherry, cassis, violet, spices, noble earth, graphite and great minerality.
Charlopin-Parizot signature: ripe fruit, generous expression, broad texture, ambitious ageing, palate depth, noble spices and long persistence.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet and purple reflections, bright, dense and still youthful in expression. In magnum, evolution should remain slow, with the colour preserving brilliance, intensity and depth for a long time.
Nose: deep, expressive and noble, with black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, cassis, black fruits, rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, cedar and fine earth. With aeration, nuances of graphite, forest floor, cocoa, sweet pepper, fine leather, black tea, incense, fresh truffle and limestone minerality may appear.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, broad, silky and structured, with ripe fruit perfectly supported by the freshness of the vintage. Flavours of black cherry, Morello cherry, black fruits, spice, cedar, liquorice, noble earth and graphite unfold with depth, supported by fine yet present tannins. The finish is long, fresh, mineral and persistent, with an impression of controlled power and great Burgundian nobility.
Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, cassis, black fruits, deep small red berries.
Flowers and spices: rose, violet, sweet spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, incense, noble perfume.
Evolution and terroir: cedar, graphite, noble earth, forest floor, cocoa, black tea, fine leather, fresh truffle, limestone minerality.
Overall impression: deep, broad and mineral Chambertin, with generous fruit, silky texture, noble tannins and a finish built for long ageing.
Expression of the 2017 vintage
The 2017 vintage in Burgundy produced wines that are often luminous, balanced and expressive, with fine fruit purity and structures that are more accessible than in the most massive years. In Chambertin, this year allows an elegant reading of the Grand Cru: the wine preserves the depth and power of the terroir, but with greater aromatic brightness, tactile suppleness and immediate freshness.
Today, this Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 in magnum remains young and has very fine ageing potential. It can already impress through its perfume, ripe fruit and texture after measured aeration, but will gain complexity with time: truffle, forest floor, fine leather, melted spices, dried flowers, noble earth, graphite and mineral nuances should gradually join the depth of the fruit.
In summary: a rare, broad and deeply noble Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 in magnum, driven by the mythical terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin and the generous signature of Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot.
Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, cassis, black fruits, rose, violet, sweet spices, liquorice, cedar, noble earth, graphite, fine leather and a very long mineral finish.
