Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 — Domaine Trapet Père & Fils

This Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 from Domaine Trapet Père & Fils, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the noblest, deepest and most spiritual expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin. From the mythical cru that stands at the summit of the village hierarchy, it offers a Pinot Noir of great stature: black cherry, Morello cherry, wild raspberry, cassis, black fruits, old rose, violet, fine spices, noble earth, liquorice, graphite, forest floor and a very long mineral finish.

Domaine Trapet Père & Fils is one of the historic names of Gevrey-Chambertin, recognised for an approach deeply respectful of life and terroir. Chambertin represents the summit of the domaine: a Grand Cru that is powerful, vertical, fleshy and meditative at once. The 2016 vintage brings remarkable freshness, aromatic precision and a tannic structure of great finesse, while the magnum format further enhances slow evolution and ageing potential.

The spirit of the wine

A Chambertin of majesty, deep without heaviness, powerful without hardness, driven by mineral energy and great purity of fruit. The 2016 combines intensity, freshness and tactile nobility: red and black fruits, dark flowers, spice, fine earth, graphite, chiselled tannins and a long, straight and vibrant finish. It is a Grand Cru of patience, silence and very long ageing potential.

Terroir: Chambertin, the noble heart of Gevrey-Chambertin

Chambertin is one of Burgundy’s greatest red Grands Crus, located at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin on a perfectly exposed slope. Its terroir combines clay, limestone, marl and stones, giving Pinot Noir profound structure, great mineral energy and exceptional ageing capacity. It is a cru of contained power, where density unfolds slowly with age.

At Trapet, Chambertin is distinguished by a particularly pure and inhabited reading of the terroir. The wine does not seek immediate demonstration, but balance between flesh, tension, depth and transparency. In the 2016, this origin translates into precise black fruit, a floral dimension, very fine spices, noble earth, stony minerality and tight yet highly elegant tannins.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Chambertin, Gevrey-Chambertin, clay, limestone, marl, black cherry, Morello cherry, cassis, violet, spices, noble earth, graphite and great minerality.

Trapet signature: depth, energy, respect for living soils, fruit purity, fine tannins, measured ageing, verticality and great expression of place.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby with garnet and purple reflections, bright, dense and still very youthful in expression. In magnum, evolution should remain slow, with the colour preserving brightness, intensity and depth for a long time.

Nose: noble, deep and still reserved, with black cherry, Morello cherry, wild raspberry, cassis, black fruits, old rose, violet, fine spices, liquorice, noble earth and a touch of graphite. With aeration, nuances of forest floor, black tea, fine leather, incense, sweet pepper, fresh truffle, root and limestone minerality may appear.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, dense, vertical and highly precise, with profound substance that remains perfectly held. The tannins are tight, fine and noble, supporting pure red and black fruit, delicate spice, fine earth and persistent mineral tension. The finish is very long, fresh, intense and vibrant, with a sensation of stone, graphite and great Burgundian nobility.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, wild raspberry, cassis, black fruits, deep small red berries.

Flowers and spices: old rose, violet, fine spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, incense, noble perfume.

Evolution and terroir: noble earth, graphite, forest floor, black tea, fine leather, fresh truffle, root, limestone minerality.

Overall impression: deep, vertical, mineral and majestic Chambertin, with great fruit purity, noble tannins and a finish built for very long ageing.

Expression of the 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage in Burgundy produced fresh, precise, balanced and often remarkably expressive wines after a difficult start to the season. In Chambertin, this freshness gives a wine of tension, purity and great definition, where the natural depth of the Grand Cru remains perfectly framed by the energy of the vintage. The result is intense but not massive, built on length, finesse and mineral resonance.

Today, this Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 in magnum remains very young and deserves extended cellaring. It can already impress through perfume, density and precision after measured aeration, but its true potential will be revealed with time: truffle, forest floor, fine leather, melted spices, dried flowers, noble earth, graphite and mineral complexity should gradually join the purity of the fruit.

In summary: a rare, deep and masterful Chambertin Grand Cru 2016, enhanced by the magnum format, driven by the nobility of the terroir and the luminous precision of Domaine Trapet.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, wild raspberry, cassis, black fruits, old rose, violet, fine spices, liquorice, noble earth, graphite, forest floor, fine leather and a very long mineral finish.
