Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1999 — Double Magnum 3 L OWC
This Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1999 in double magnum 3 L embodies one of the great historic expressions of modern Amarone. Presented in its original Allegrini wooden case, this large format offers particular appeal for collectors and enthusiasts: slower evolution, rare presence at the table and a stronger patrimonial dimension than a standard bottle.
The 1999 vintage delivers here a fully mature, opulent and profound Amarone, marked by preserved dark fruits, black cherry, plum, dried fig, chocolate, sweet spices, tobacco, fine leather and a highly seductive aromatic patina. The natural richness of Amarone unfolds with amplitude, while the double magnum format helps preserve structure and depth over time.
Terroir: Valpolicella Classica and the tradition of appassimento
Allegrini is one of the benchmark names of Valpolicella Classica. Amarone della Valpolicella is based on the traditional method of appassimento: the grapes are dried after harvest in order to concentrate sugars, polyphenols, aromas and structure. This technique gives rise to powerful, deep and intensely textured red wines, while preserving the noble bitter edge typical of Amarone.
The 1999 blend is composed of 45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta. Corvina and Corvinone bring black cherry, depth and structure, Rondinella supports roundness and balance, while Oseleta reinforces colour, density and tannic presence.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep dark red with garnet and brick-tinged reflections, dense and evolved, showing fine visual concentration and the patina typical of a great mature Amarone.
Nose: rich and enveloping, with preserved black cherry, plum, dried fig, currant, stewed blackberry, dark chocolate, cocoa, liquorice, blond tobacco, fine leather, sweet spices and a balsamic touch. With aeration, nuances of coffee, undergrowth, truffle, walnut, brown caramel and dried herbs may appear.
Palate: ample, generous and velvety, with deep substance, melted tannins and noble warmth that is beautifully integrated. The wine combines ripe dark fruits, dried fruits, chocolate, spice, tobacco and balsamic notes, leading to a long, enveloping, lightly bitter and persistent finish.
95/100 — Wine Advocate
Wine Advocate awarded 95/100 to the Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1999, praising a rich, jammy and spicy wine with intense aromas, followed by a broad, voluminous and warm palate marked by very ripe fruit, chocolate, voluptuous texture and an exceptionally long finish.
Expression of the 1999 vintage and the value of double magnum
The 1999 vintage gives this Amarone a rich, mature and deeply patinated expression. Today, the wine is in an advanced phase of maturity, more focused on complexity, preserved fruits, chocolate, leather, spice and balsamic notes than on youthful power. The double magnum 3 L format naturally slows the wine’s evolution and enhances its appeal for a grand table, a tasting among enthusiasts or a collection of rare Italian large formats. Progressive opening is recommended, without overly long decanting, in order to preserve its balance and mature nuances.
In summary: an Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1999 in double magnum 3 L, presented in its original wooden case, awarded 95 points by Wine Advocate, marked by preserved black cherry, plum, dried fig, chocolate, liquorice, spice, tobacco, velvety texture and great length.
Food pairings: braised beef, matured rib of beef, game in sauce, hare à la royale, confit lamb, duck with spices, porcini risotto, creamy polenta, black truffle, aged Parmesan, mature Pecorino or a contemplative tasting at the end of a meal.
