Amarone della Valpolicella 2003 — Romano Dal Forno
This Amarone della Valpolicella 2003 from Romano Dal Forno, offered here in the rare 5 L format, is one of the most powerful, sumptuous and sought-after expressions of Valpolicella. From the Monte Lodoletta vineyard and a warm vintage, it unfolds a monumental profile: black fruits, black cherry, dried plum, fig, bitter chocolate, liquorice, tar, smoke, minerals, sweet spices and a finish of impressive depth.
Romano Dal Forno is regarded as one of the absolute masters of modern Amarone, with an approach of extreme precision in the vineyard, during appassimento and in the cellar. The 2003 stands out for its solar richness, dense substance and relatively greater accessibility than some other vintages from the estate, partly linked to a slightly higher residual sweetness than the house norm. The large 5 L format encourages slower, more stable and particularly noble evolution.
A spectacular, deep and baroque Amarone, yet held by genuine mineral precision. The 2003 combines richness of black fruit, chocolate, liquorice, tar and smoke with a broad, velvety, enveloping and very long palate. It is a wine of concentration, power and texture, to be appreciated for its generosity as much as for its ability to gain complexity with age.
Terroir: Monte Lodoletta, Val d’Illasi and the concentration of appassimento
Dal Forno Romano is located in the Illasi Valley, east of the historic Valpolicella zone. The Monte Lodoletta vineyard gives birth to wines of great density, from grapes selected with extreme precision. For Amarone, the bunches undergo appassimento, a long drying process that concentrates sugars, polyphenols, aromas and structure.
Dal Forno’s Amarone is traditionally based on the grape varieties of Valpolicella, with Corvina dominant, complemented by Rondinella, Croatina and Oseleta. In the 2003, the warm vintage amplifies density, fruit ripeness and softness of texture, while the terroir and highly precise vinification maintain the notes of minerals, tar, liquorice, smoke and spice that define the estate’s great Amarone wines.
Terroir expression: Valpolicella, Monte Lodoletta, Corvina, Rondinella, Croatina, Oseleta, appassimento, black fruits, bitter chocolate, liquorice, tar, smoke, minerals and great density.
Dal Forno signature: extreme selection, precise appassimento, masterful concentration, ambitious ageing, velvety texture, aromatic power and very long persistence.
Tasting notes
Appearance: very deep garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and purple reflections, dense, bright and still remarkably sustained. In 5 L format, evolution is slower, allowing the wine to preserve intensity, brilliance and depth despite the age of the vintage.
Nose: broad, inviting and sumptuous, with black fruits, black cherry, dried plum, fig, bitter chocolate, liquorice, tar, smoke and minerals. With aeration, nuances of mocha, cocoa, raisin, fine leather, sweet spices, tobacco, balsamic notes, warm earth and dried herbs may appear.
Palate: full, dense, enveloping and very deep, with velvety texture and impressive richness. Flavours of black fruits, bitter chocolate, liquorice, plum, fig, tar, smoke and spice unfold with power, supported by ripe tannins and dark minerality. The finish is immense, persistent, warm and complex, with a sense of depth that seems to last indefinitely.
Fruit: black fruits, black cherry, dried plum, fig, raisin, candied and ripe fruit.
Ageing and spices: bitter chocolate, mocha, cocoa, sweet spices, tobacco, fine leather, balsamic notes.
Terroir and evolution: liquorice, tar, smoke, minerals, warm earth, dried herbs, ripe tannins and endless finish.
Overall impression: monumental, rich, deep and accessible Amarone in the Dal Forno style, with sumptuous substance and exceptional persistence.
Expression of the 2003 vintage
The 2003 vintage in Veneto was marked by heat, giving wines of high ripeness, great richness and generous texture. At Dal Forno, the 2003 Amarone is often described as more accessible than some vintages from the estate, while retaining remarkable depth. Recurrent notes evoke black fruits, bitter chocolate, minerals, liquorice, tar, smoke and an extremely long finish.
Today, this Amarone 2003 in 5 L can offer a very complete expression, provided storage has been perfect. The large format preserves relative freshness, slows oxidative evolution and allows the wine to develop further complexity: leather, tobacco, cocoa, balsamic notes, black truffle, melted spices, dried fruits and mineral nuances should gradually join the power of the black fruit.
In summary: a rare and monumental Romano Dal Forno Amarone 2003 in 5 L format, driven by the solar richness of the vintage, the precision of appassimento and exceptional aromatic depth.
Dominant aromas: black fruits, black cherry, dried plum, fig, raisin, bitter chocolate, liquorice, tar, smoke, minerals, mocha, fine leather, tobacco, balsamic notes and an endless finish.
