La Mort 2017 – Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte – Domaine de Chevillard
A characterful single-vineyard Mondeuse: depth, energy, and patient aging
Terroir
La Mort is a single-vineyard cuvée from the Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte Cru, an emblematic terroir for Mondeuse in Savoie. The parcel, with a south-east exposure, lies on shallow soils of red clay (rich in iron) and quartz, bringing structure, tension, and intensity. The 2017 vintage, marked by late-April frost, produced a rare and concentrated wine, designed to fully express itself over time.
Tasting Notes
Appearance & Nose:
Deep, dark color. The nose is intense, combining black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), spice, and liquorice, with a mineral nuance reminiscent of stone and quartz.
Palate & Finish:
Structured, focused, and energetic on the palate, driven by firm tannins and a freshness that stretches the wine. Aging includes 12 months in élevage, followed by extended bottle aging of 7 years, resulting in a more settled texture and increased complexity. The finish is long, spicy, and persistent, with a clear mineral imprint.
