Domaine Charles Lachaux — Vosne-Romanée
A bold reinterpretation of Burgundian classicism
Heir to the prestigious Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, Charles Lachaux has quickly risen as one of the most inspiring winemakers in contemporary Burgundy. Based in Vosne-Romanée, he redefines the codes while honoring the deep cultural legacy of this timeless terroir. Since 2020, his visionary micro-négoce complements the family domaine, enabling him to explore neighboring vineyards with total freedom, yet the same uncompromising standards.
Philosophy & Winemaking
- Living soils: no mechanical tilling, preserving soil microbial life.
- Tailored pruning (gobelet or fan shape) to optimize photosynthesis, vine by vine.
- Active biodiversity: spontaneous plant growth and natural ground cover.
- 100% indigenous yeast fermentations, no oenological additives; several cuvées are bottled without added sulfur.
- No new oak during élevage to preserve fruit purity and tension.
The goal: wines that are vibrant, refined and transparent — where texture never overpowers freshness, and terroir speaks without disguise.
Terroirs & Vineyards
A strictly parcel-based approach — no inter-vineyard blending. Precision work tailored to each plot, depending on vine age, soil depth, and natural vigor. Key vineyard sources include:
- Côte de Nuits-Villages “Aux Montagnes” — Higher altitude, bright and energetic.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges — Including select premier cru parcels depending on the vintage.
- Vosne-Romanée — including the iconic Les Suchots.
- Occasional sourcing in Pommard, Chambolle-Musigny and even Meursault.
Signature Wines
- Côte de Nuits-Villages “Aux Montagnes” — Airy, vibrant Pinot Noir with polished tannins.
- Bourgogne Aligoté “Les Champs d’Argent” — A focused, floral white with tension, salinity, and length.
- Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” — A silky, refined interpretation of a legendary terroir.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru (depending on the vintage) — Deep yet never heavy; full of tension and lift.
Wine Style
A style instantly recognizable: pure, intense fruit, fine-grained structure, and a salivating tension that carries the finish. Far from heavy extraction or overt oak, the red wines offer dynamic mineral energy, approachable in youth but with outstanding cellaring potential.
The few whites produced combine salinity, density and a finely sculpted profile of citrus and white flowers.
A Contemporary Voice for Vosne-Romanée
By redefining the gestures and horizons of Burgundian viticulture, Charles Lachaux offers a poetic and precise reading of the climats. These are wines of sense and subtlety — free, yet deeply rooted in the memory of their place.
