Frédéric Savart — Pure finesse from the Montagne de Reims

Located in Écueil, on the Montagne de Reims, Frédéric Savart represents the third generation of a family of Champagne winegrowers. Since the late 1990s, he has transformed the domaine into one of the most admired names in grower Champagne, producing expressive, precise and terroir-driven wines from Premier Cru vineyards in Écueil and Villiers-aux-Nœuds.

Working on a small scale, Savart focuses on clarity of origin, vibrant fruit and mineral tension rather than formula or house style. His Champagnes are highly sought after for their energy, fine bubbles, low dosage and ability to combine immediate pleasure with genuine depth.

The spirit of the domaine

Frédéric Savart embodies a contemporary vision of Champagne: artisanal, precise and deeply connected to place. The wines are not built around opulence, but around freshness, texture, purity and the natural expression of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the sandy and chalky soils of the Montagne de Reims.

Terroir: Écueil and Villiers-aux-Nœuds

The domaine covers around 4 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards, mainly planted with Pinot Noir, completed by a smaller proportion of Chardonnay. The vineyards are located principally in Écueil and Villiers-aux-Nœuds, two villages where the combination of sand, chalk and cool exposure gives the wines both aromatic definition and mineral drive.

Pinot Noir forms the backbone of the domaine, bringing energy, red-fruit intensity and structure. Chardonnay adds brightness, lift and precision, especially in the more mineral, focused cuvées. Each parcel is worked with the aim of preserving its identity rather than imposing a uniform style.

Viticulture and vinification: precision with low intervention

Frédéric Savart works with a low-intervention philosophy, placing great importance on vine health, soil balance and careful grape selection. In the cellar, fermentations may take place in stainless steel, barrels or concrete eggs, depending on the cuvée and the desired expression.

Malolactic fermentation is managed according to the wine, and dosage is kept very low, sometimes avoided entirely. This approach gives Champagnes of clarity, tension and aromatic precision, allowing the terroir to remain at the centre of the wine.

Wine style

Savart Champagnes are known for their vibrancy, fine bubbles and precise aromatic profiles. They often express red apple, citrus, white peach, raspberry, redcurrant, chalk, fresh almond, subtle spice and a delicate saline finish.

The style is energetic, pure and finely textured, with a strong sense of place. The wines are terroir-first rather than style-driven, combining the generosity of Pinot Noir with the tension and clarity expected from great grower Champagne.

Iconic cuvées

L’Ouverture is the domaine’s pure Pinot Noir Champagne, fresh, direct and highly expressive, offering an excellent introduction to the Savart style.

Le Mont Benoît is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir cuvée, often deeper and more structured, combining richness, tension and refined barrel ageing.

Les Champs Chevalier reveals a more Chardonnay-driven expression, focused, mineral and precise, while Expression offers a vibrant, structured and aromatic non-dosé interpretation.

Haute Couture, produced in very limited quantities, stands among the rarest wines of the domaine: deep, saline, long and built for patient cellaring.

Ageing and gastronomic pairings

The most accessible cuvées can be enjoyed young for their energy and purity, while the single-vineyard bottlings and rare cuvées gain complexity over several years. Their low dosage and mineral structure give them excellent gastronomic versatility.

Frédéric Savart Champagnes pair beautifully with oysters, shellfish, sushi, fine charcuterie, white meats, roast poultry, Comté, fresh cheeses and refined aperitifs. The deeper Pinot Noir cuvées also work well with veal, duck, mushroom dishes and lightly truffled cuisine.
