Ulysses Vineyard — Oakville precision, Bordeaux discipline

Located on the celebrated Oakville Bench in Napa Valley, Ulysses Vineyard is one of the most refined Californian projects of Christian Moueix. Acquired in 2008, the estate reflects the same pursuit of balance, restraint and terroir expression that has shaped his work between Bordeaux and California.

Ulysses is not a second expression of Dominus, but a distinct vineyard with its own identity. Its Cabernet Sauvignon-led wine combines the depth of Oakville fruit with a precise, finely structured profile: dark berries, graphite, floral nuances, polished tannins and a long, mineral finish. It is a Napa Valley wine of quiet authority, built on clarity rather than excess.

History

Ulysses Vineyard lies on land once associated with the historic Charles Hopper Ranch, one of the notable vineyard sites of Oakville. After acquiring the property, Christian Moueix and his team undertook a meticulous restoration of the vineyard, studying its soils, exposures and microclimates in order to reveal the full personality of this exceptional Napa Valley terroir.

Terroir

Situated at the foot of the Mayacamas Range, the vineyard extends over an alluvial fan composed of deep gravelly clay-loam soils. This naturally well-drained terroir is particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, giving Ulysses its combination of density, freshness, tension and mineral precision.

Viticulture and winemaking

The estate favours dry farming, encouraging deep root systems and a more direct expression of place. Certified organic by CCOF since 2021, Ulysses is farmed with close attention to vine balance and natural resilience. In the cellar, the approach remains restrained: careful selection of clusters and berries, gentle vinification and ageing in French oak, with the proportion of new barrels adapted to the character of each vintage.

Wine style

Ulysses is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led wine, completed according to the vintage by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its profile combines cassis, blackberry, black cherry, violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco and fine spices. The palate is structured yet polished, with a dense core of fruit, measured oak influence and a long, energetic finish.

Emblematic wine

The estate is centred on one principal wine: Ulysses, an estate-grown Napa Valley red wine dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced in limited quantities, it reflects the individuality of the Oakville site while carrying the disciplined, long-term vision of Christian Moueix.

Cellaring and food pairings

Ulysses has the structure and freshness required for long ageing, especially in the strongest vintages. It pairs beautifully with grilled beef, ribeye steak, roast lamb, venison, duck breast, braised short ribs, truffle dishes, mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.
