Rather than seeking a showy style, the estate favours a measured, transparent expression of place, built on precise ripeness, living soils and winemaking that allows each terroir to speak clearly.

Founded by Aubert and Pamela de Villaine, the domaine is now led in the same spirit by Pierre de Benoist. This family continuity gives the wines a recognisable signature: whites with drive and finesse, reds with a refined, lifted profile, and a rare ability to express the Côte Chalonnaise with quiet authority.

Bouzeron, a terroir apart

The heart of the estate lies in Bouzeron, Burgundy’s historic village for Aligoté. The vines grow on limestone-clay slopes, in a bright and well-ventilated setting that helps preserve natural freshness while allowing full aromatic maturity. This landscape gives the wines their clean structure, mineral edge and sense of precision.

Viticulture is based on careful soil work, moderate yields and a long-standing organic approach. In the cellar, intervention remains restrained, with the aim of preserving the character of the fruit and the identity of each parcel rather than imposing a marked winemaking signature.

Aligoté doré at its finest

The estate’s Bouzeron is one of the great reference points for Aligoté doré. Long regarded as a secondary grape variety, Aligoté finds here a serious and refined expression, with citrus brightness, saline energy and a firm, finely drawn texture. The wine does not rely on weight; it stands out through its freshness, precision and long, clean finish.

This flagship cuvée has played an important role in changing the perception of Bouzeron and of terroir-driven Aligoté. It shows that a great white Burgundy can be accessible in spirit, gastronomic in character and deeply rooted in its origin.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Côte Chalonnaise

Beyond Bouzeron, Domaine de Villaine also produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from selected sites in the Côte Chalonnaise and neighbouring Burgundy appellations. The whites are shaped by freshness, definition and a natural balance between fruit, stone and tension. Oak is used with restraint, allowing the wines to remain clear, direct and highly drinkable.

The reds, including cuvées from Mercurey, Santenay and Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise depending on the vintage, offer a fine-boned expression of Pinot Noir. They favour floral detail, bright fruit and delicate tannins, with the best bottles gaining nuance and savoury complexity after a few years in the cellar.
