Château Kirwan — The Refined Elegance of Margaux
1855 Grand Cru Classé with a floral, airy signature — a finely etched Margaux crafted with precision and grace.
A Family-Shaped Elegance
Owned by the Merlaut family since 1919, Château Kirwan today is guided by Marie Dubernet Merlaut (viticulture) and oenologist Anne Dubreuil alongside technical director Laurent Fortin. Together, they have honed an estate style defined by delicacy, clarity of fruit and striking freshness — a true Margaux of lace and light.
Terroir & Grape Varieties — Finesse and Balance
The vineyards lie on fine, well-drained Garonne gravels, ideally exposed — an elite Médoc matrix for wines that are both structured and expressive.
- Cabernet Sauvignon ~60% — backbone, length, longevity
- Merlot ~30% — suppleness and charming fruit
- Petit Verdot ~8% — aromatic intensity and spice
- Cabernet Franc ~2% — finesse and lift
Viticulture — Precision with Respect for Nature
Responsible, parcel-by-parcel farming with cover crops, traditional pruning, hand harvesting, moderate yields and rigorous sorting. This detailed approach enables a fine reading of each plot and balanced ripeness at harvest.
Winemaking & Ageing — Silky Oak, Bright Fruit
Separate vinification by plot in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. 3–4 week macerations with gentle punch-downs encourage delicate extraction.
Ageing for 18 months in French oak barrels (about 50% new) polishes the tannins, refines the bouquet and supports a characteristic saline, elongated finish.
Signature Cuvées
Château Kirwan (Grand Vin) — Elegant and airy with notes of blackcurrant, violet, cedar and fine spice. Silky texture, poised structure and a persistent, graceful finish.
Les Charmes de Kirwan — The second wine: fruit-forward, floral and more approachable in youth, while remaining faithful to the estate’s identity.
