Château Troplong Mondot: racy power, silky opulence and elegant structure
A true symbol of the Right Bank, Château Troplong Mondot stands among the most emblematic estates of Saint-Émilion. Classified Cru Classé, the property spans 44 hectares of ideally exposed hillsides with clay-gravel and clay-limestone soils. Owned by the Cuvelier family and later by Laurent Dassault, the château has built its reputation on sumptuous wines with velvety tannins, combining power, depth and natural elegance.
Terroir & Grape Varieties
The vineyard sits on well-drained slopes with ideal exposure, ensuring even ripening and natural concentration of the grapes. The soils combine clay-gravel on the plateau and clay-limestone on the slopes.
| Variety | Proportion |
|---|---|
| Merlot | 90% |
| Cabernet Franc | 5% |
| Cabernet Sauvignon | 5% |
Viticulture & Winemaking
Viticulture follows a sustainable approach with manual harvesting and meticulous berry sorting. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks is carried out with great precision, favouring gentle extractions to preserve balance and aromatic finesse. The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in barrels, around 50% of which are new oak, enhancing the silky texture and aromatic complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Style & Ageing Potential
- Colour: deep, brilliant black
- Nose: blackberry, plum, cocoa, fine spices
- Palate: broad, velvety, silky tannins and a long, refined finish
This wine reveals perfectly mastered opulence and a subtle balance between structure and charm. Best enjoyed after 10 years, it can age for 30 to 40 years, developing refined tertiary notes of truffle, undergrowth and tobacco.
