Château Troplong Mondot rises above Saint-Émilion from one of the finest slopes on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. A Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, it produces deep, fleshy and refined wines, where the natural power of Merlot is now balanced by remarkable precision, freshness and textural elegance.
Château Troplong Mondot — depth, brilliance and refined Saint-Émilion elegance
Set on the heights of Saint-Émilion, Château Troplong Mondot stands among the leading names of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Its single-block vineyard, planted on a remarkable hillside, produces wines of strong personality, combining amplitude, structure and a deep imprint of their clay-limestone origin.
Long associated with a generous and opulent style, the estate has undergone an important evolution in recent years, moving towards greater precision, freshness and tannic finesse. Under the direction of Aymeric de Gironde, Troplong Mondot retains its natural depth while offering a clearer reading of its terroir and a more contemporary sense of elegance.
History
The history of Troplong Mondot dates back to the eighteenth century. Thanks to the exceptional quality of its hillside and the consistency of its finest vintages, the estate gradually established itself as one of the major names of Saint-Émilion. Since its acquisition by SCOR in 2017, the property has undertaken significant work in the vineyard, in the cellar and in the parcel-by-parcel interpretation of its terroir.
Terroir and winemaking
The vineyard covers around 40 hectares of vines, located on the summit and slopes of the Saint-Émilion plateau. This elevated position for the appellation, combined with varied exposures and excellent natural drainage, allows the grapes to reach full maturity while preserving balance.
The soils combine deep clays, limestone with asteria fossils and clay-limestone nuances depending on the parcel. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection, while vinification is conducted parcel by parcel. Extractions are adapted to each lot in order to preserve fruit brilliance, tannic finesse and the limestone-driven sensation that naturally lengthens the finish.
Style of the wines
Château Troplong Mondot offers a deep and expressive profile, marked by ripe black fruits, blackberry, cassis, black plum, violet, sweet spices, cocoa and, at times, a touch of graphite. On the palate, the wine is defined by volume, silky texture and a dense tannic frame, now more finely shaped and precisely drawn.
With age, the great vintages develop notes of truffle, blond tobacco, fine leather, undergrowth and noble spices. The finest bottles can evolve for several decades, preserving the depth, length and noble fruit character that define this great Saint-Émilion estate.
Emblematic wines
- Château Troplong Mondot — the estate’s grand vin, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion. Deep, structured and distinguished, it expresses the full strength of the hillside and offers excellent ageing potential.
- Mondot — the estate’s second wine, more approachable in its youth while retaining the fruit brilliance, precision and limestone identity of the property.
Cellaring and food pairings
Troplong Mondot is a wine built for ageing, capable of revealing its full dimension after 8 to 12 years in the cellar and of evolving much longer in great vintages. Its depth and texture make it a natural match for noble meats, slow-cooked dishes and flavourful cuisine.
It pairs beautifully with aged rib of beef, beef fillet with mushrooms, rack of lamb, roasted pigeon, game birds, truffle risotto or mature cheeses. Older vintages are particularly suited to earthy flavours, reduced jus, forest-floor nuances and noble mushrooms.
