Domaine de Trévallon — The Cult Wine of the Alpilles
Domaine de Trévallon is one of the most distinctive and respected estates in Provence. Located in Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, at the foot of the Alpilles, it has built its reputation on a free and deeply personal vision: producing great age-worthy wines, rooted in their terroir, without submitting to conventions when they limit the expression of place.
The first vines were planted in 1973 by Éloi Dürrbach, on the family estate where his father, the artist René Dürrbach, had recognised the exceptional potential of the limestone soils. Today, the estate remains in the hands of the Dürrbach family, with continuity ensured around Ostiane Dürrbach, in the spirit of the founding vision: naturalness, exacting standards, independence and depth.
A Provence of character, freedom and ageing potential. Trévallon combines the depth of Syrah, the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the freshness of the Alpilles and artisanal vinification to create wines that are powerful, vibrant, digestible and profoundly original.
History: a legend born outside conventions
Éloi Dürrbach planted the first vines at Trévallon in 1973, in a wild landscape of garrigue, pine trees, limestone rocks and Provençal hills. From the beginning, he chose a singular path: blending Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal proportions, convinced that this marriage could give birth to one of the great wines of southern France.
This freedom led the estate outside the framework of regional appellations when regulations sharply limited the permitted share of Cabernet Sauvignon. Rather than change his wine, Trévallon preserved its identity and continued under the IGP Alpilles designation. This bold choice helped forge the legend of the estate: a wine with a modest classification, yet recognised by connoisseurs as one of Provence’s great references.
Terroir: limestone, garrigue and Alpilles freshness
The estate covers around 17 hectares, divided between approximately 15 hectares of red varieties and 2 hectares of white varieties. The vines lie on the northern slopes of the Alpilles, in a preserved environment surrounded by garrigue, woodland and limestone reliefs.
The soils, dominated by limestone, bring tension, freshness and depth to the wines. The Provençal climate provides ripeness and aromatic intensity, while the influence of the Alpilles and the exposure of the parcels help preserve natural acidity and an energy that distinguishes Trévallon from more solar southern reds.
Terroir expression: Alpilles, Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, limestone, garrigue, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne, Roussanne, southern Alpine freshness, spice, depth and tension.
Trévallon signature: red blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, whole-cluster vinification, indigenous yeasts, long ageing in large oak foudres, natural energy and strong ageing potential.
Viticulture: an organic and artisanal approach
Since its beginnings, Trévallon has practised respectful viticulture, without herbicides or unnecessary synthetic products. Soil work, observation of natural balances and limited yields make it possible to produce healthy, concentrated grapes perfectly suited to low-intervention vinification.
The estate has never sought to standardise its wines. Each vintage keeps its own personality, rhythm and relief. This artisanal approach gives birth to cuvées that may seem austere or wild in youth, but that gain complexity, depth and aromatic nobility with time.
Red: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, black pepper, bay leaf, thyme, garrigue, cedar, fine leather, tobacco and graphite.
Evolution: truffle, forest floor, black olive, sweet spices, cigar box, smoky, balsamic and mineral notes.
White: pear, white peach, apricot, white flowers, fine honey, almond, fennel, warm stone, citrus and salinity.
Overall impression: deep, living and singular wines, combining Mediterranean density, limestone freshness, spice and great ageing energy.
Vinification: whole clusters, indigenous yeasts and large foudres
Vinification at Trévallon is based on a natural and low-intervention approach. The reds are vinified with whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts, without seeking excessive extraction. The goal is to preserve fruit energy, vintage freshness and the natural structure brought by the Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon blend.
Harvest: manual picking and careful grape selection.
Red vinification: whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, measured extraction and respect for the vintage.
Red ageing: around two years in large oak foudres, softening the structure without marking the wine with excessive oak.
Philosophy: accompany the wine without constraining it, preserve its natural relief and allow time to build complexity.
The red wine: Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal proportions
Domaine de Trévallon’s red wine is one of the most famous blends in southern France: around 50% Syrah and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah brings spice, flesh, depth and Mediterranean grounding; Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, freshness, tannic framework and ageing capacity.
This combination creates a wine apart: neither fully Bordeaux-like nor strictly Provençal, but profoundly Trévallon. In great vintages, the red can age for several decades, developing aromas of garrigue, leather, truffle, tobacco, spice and candied black fruits, while retaining remarkable freshness.
The white wine: rarity, tension and complexity
Trévallon Blanc is produced in very limited quantities, from a blend dominated by Marsanne and Roussanne, complemented depending on the vintage by varieties such as Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc and sometimes Clairette. It represents a more confidential yet highly sought-after facet of the estate.
This white stands out for its texture, tension and ability to evolve gracefully. In youth, it expresses white flowers, citrus, pear and yellow fruits; with age, it gains notes of honey, almond, wax, warm stone and salinity.
Labels: the artistic legacy of René Dürrbach
Trévallon’s visual identity is inseparable from the works of René Dürrbach, artist, painter and sculptor, close to major creators of the 20th century. His graphic compositions dress the estate’s bottles and change according to the vintage, forming a series of labels that have themselves become collectors’ items.
Sought-after vintages
Among the most sought-after red vintages are 1990, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020, depending on preferences for maturity, freshness, structure and evolution.
The most sought-after white vintages vary according to availability and vintage profile, but great years stand out for their tension, balance and ability to gain complexity after several years in bottle.
