Bodega Catena Zapata – Pioneer of High-Altitude Viticulture in Argentina
Mendoza • Argentina • Founded in 1902 — Led by Dr. Laura Catena
A Family Legacy Reinventing Argentine Wine
Founded in 1902 in Mendoza, Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s most influential wineries. In the 1980s–1990s, Nicolás Catena revolutionized the country’s wine scene by embracing high-altitude vineyards and modern precision. Today, his daughter Laura Catena — physician and scientist — carries the torch with a rigorous, sustainable approach through the Catena Institute of Wine.
Philosophy & Winemaking
Science meets tradition and terroir. Parcels are studied in detail, fermentations are often native-yeast, vinifications are parcel-based, and élevage is tailored to grape and site — aiming for elegance, freshness, structure and long ageing.
Terroirs & Vineyards
Key sites span ~900–1,500 m above sea level. The iconic Adrianna Vineyard (Gualtallary) reaches ~1,500 m; Nicasia (Altamira) and Angélica (Lunlunta) lie lower. Cool elevations preserve natural acidity and drive aromatic complexity. Flagship grape: Malbec, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and exploratory plantings.
Signature Style
- Pure, finely structured wines with vibrant freshness.
- Reds: depth and lift; Whites: precision, tension and length.
