Luciano Sandrone — The Refined Brilliance of Nebbiolo in Barolo
Luciano Sandrone is one of the great contemporary names of Barolo. Founded in the late 1970s, the estate has established itself through a singular vision of Nebbiolo: wines that are finely drawn, refined and nuanced, capable of combining the strength of Piedmont’s great terroirs with a touch of remarkable finesse.
A self-taught figure who became an international reference, Luciano Sandrone marked the modern history of Piedmont through his sense of detail, clean vinifications and measured ageing. Today, the spirit of the estate is carried on by the Sandrone family, notably Barbara Sandrone, Luciano’s daughter, and Luca Sandrone, his brother, with the same pursuit of balance, cru readability and respect for Nebbiolo.
An elegant, floral and deeply Piedmontese reading of Nebbiolo. Luciano Sandrone seeks wines that are both structured and polished, where the natural power of Barolo is woven into a fine frame, bright fruit, composed tannins and a long spicy expression.
History: from Cannubi Boschis to a world-class signature
The story of the estate began in 1978, when Luciano Sandrone acquired his first parcels in the Cannubi Boschis cru, one of Barolo’s historic sectors. At a time when the appellation was undergoing major change, he developed a personal approach, attentive to grape ripeness, fruit purity and careful ageing.
His first Barolo from Cannubi Boschis quickly revealed a distinctive style: less austere than some traditional Barolo, yet without renouncing the poise, structure and ageing potential of Nebbiolo. The estate gradually became one of the benchmarks of modern Piedmont, admired for its consistency and the quality of its tannins.
The cuvée from Cannubi Boschis has been released under the name ALESTE since the 2013 vintage, in tribute to Luciano Sandrone’s grandchildren, Alessia and Stefano. This change of name preserves the intimate link with the original terroir while placing the cuvée within the family continuity of the estate.
Terroir: Barolo, Cannubi Boschis and the mosaic of great crus
The estate works with several major sectors of the Barolo DOCG area, with a historic anchor in Cannubi Boschis. This cru, located in the village of Barolo, gives wines of great aromatic complexity, combining rose, cherry, dark fruits, spices, liquorice and tannins of rare delicacy.
Alongside ALESTE, Barolo Le Vigne follows a complementary approach: a blend of parcels from several villages and crus of the appellation. This mosaic brings together the strength of Serralunga d’Alba, the structure of Castiglione Falletto, the lift of Novello and the elegance of the village of Barolo.
The estate also produces Vite Talin, a rare cuvée from a particular selection of Nebbiolo, as well as more accessible but carefully crafted wines such as Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto d’Alba.
Expression of place: Barolo, Cannubi Boschis, La Morra, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Novello, Nebbiolo, rose, cherry, liquorice, spices, fine tannins and long persistence.
Sandrone signature: structured, slender and silky Barolo wines, with great fruit clarity, controlled extraction and remarkable ageing ability.
Viticulture and vinification: rigour, balance and measured ageing
The estate’s work is based on rigorous parcel selection, careful observation of ripeness and the desire to harvest fully ripe Nebbiolo that remains balanced. This approach produces wines that are expressive, distinguished and endowed with great textural finesse.
In the cellar, vinification favours clean expression and respect for the fruit. Fermentations are carried out with precision, while ageing takes place mainly in larger vessels, notably 500-litre oak tonneaux, in order to support the tannins without marking the wines with excessive oak. The aim remains constant: clarity, balance, length and cru expression.
Wine style
Luciano Sandrone Barolo wines are defined by their polished texture, controlled density and great aromatic purity. They combine red and dark fruits, rose, violet, liquorice, sweet spices, tobacco, balsamic notes and finely integrated tannins. Their style seduces through its balance between intensity and refinement.
ALESTE offers a reading centred on the Cannubi Boschis cru, with an enveloping, floral and long-held palate. Le Vigne expresses a broader vision of Barolo, based on the blending of several terroirs. Vite Talin, rarer and more singular, offers a dense, confidential and long-built expression of Nebbiolo.
Emblematic cuvées
Barolo ALESTE: the iconic cuvée from Cannubi Boschis, formerly released under the name of the cru. A floral, distinguished and velvety Barolo with exceptional length.
Barolo Le Vigne: a blend of several Barolo crus, offering a complete vision of the appellation: structure, balance, complexity and remarkable ageing potential.
Barolo Vite Talin: a rare cuvée from a particular selection of Nebbiolo, produced in limited quantities, with a dense, nuanced and highly personal expression.
Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore: from the Roero, on sandy slopes, offering a more airy, floral and accessible expression of Nebbiolo.
Barbera d’Alba: an energetic, fruit-driven and chiselled wine, with fine vibrancy and a clear reading of the grape variety.
Dolcetto d’Alba: a cuvée for immediate pleasure, with crunchy fruit, a supple palate and a sincere style.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
The estate’s great Barolo wines can evolve for 15 to 30 years depending on the cuvée and vintage, sometimes longer in exceptional years. With time, they develop notes of faded rose, white truffle, fine leather, noble tar, black tea, patinated red fruits and sweet spices.
At the table, Sandrone Barolo wines pair beautifully with tajarin with truffles, mushroom risotto, veal, lamb, braised beef, game, slow-cooked dishes, mature cheeses and classic Piedmontese cuisine. Valmaggiore, Barbera and Dolcetto are more accessible, ideal with fine charcuterie, pasta, grilled meats, poultry and characterful Italian dishes.
