Barolo Le Vigne 2017 — Luciano Sandrone
This Barolo Le Vigne 2017 from Luciano Sandrone embodies one of the most refined and sought-after expressions of modern Nebbiolo. Produced from a selection of great Barolo sites, it combines fruit depth, floral precision, noble tannins and the tactile elegance that has made the Sandrone estate so admired.
The 2017 vintage, warm and dry in the Langhe, gives here a dense, vibrant and remarkably balanced Barolo. The wine stands out for its intense red fruit, notes of rose, spice, fine leather, mint, liquorice and graphite, with a structure that remains youthful yet already beautifully harmonious.
Terroir: Barolo, cru blending and Sandrone precision
Le Vigne is a parcel-blended Barolo, crafted from several vineyards located in the communes of Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Barolo and Novello. This approach allows Luciano Sandrone to seek balance between structure, perfume, depth, freshness and length.
The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo, with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts, maceration and fermentation in open tanks, followed by ageing in French oak. This precise vinification highlights the finesse of the grape variety without masking the identity of the different terroirs that shape the cuvée.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red with garnet reflections, showing fine brightness and visual intensity that underlines the concentration of the vintage.
Nose: elegant and expressive, with red cherry, raspberry, dried strawberry, rose, violet, cedar, fine leather, mint, sweet spices, liquorice, tea, noble tar and a balsamic touch. With aeration, nuances of graphite, blond tobacco, blood orange and undergrowth may appear.
Palate: structured, precise and silky, with deep red fruit, fine yet still present tannins and lively acidity. The substance is ample without heaviness, carried by a long, spicy, floral and slightly mineral finish, very true to the elegance of the Sandrone style.
97/100 — James Suckling
James Suckling describes the Barolo Le Vigne 2017 from Luciano Sandrone as an opulent and seductive wine, marked by perfume, cedar, dried flowers, dried strawberries and a hint of nutmeg. He highlights a medium to full-bodied palate, round, fine and velvety tannins, and a savoury, highly attractive finish. The cuvée also received 97/100 from Wine Enthusiast and 96/100 from Wine & Spirits.
Expression of the 2017 vintage
The 2017 vintage was warm and dry in the Langhe, yet day-night temperature shifts helped preserve fine freshness. In this context, Le Vigne shows more muscle and concentration than some more classical vintages, while retaining the balance, tension and aromatic finesse that define the estate. Extended cellaring will allow it to gain further complexity around dried rose, tar, truffle, fine leather and spice.
In summary: a Barolo Le Vigne 2017 from Luciano Sandrone, awarded 97 points by James Suckling, marked by cherry, rose, spice, cedar, mint, velvety tannins and great textural elegance.
Food pairings: roast lamb, braised veal, white truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, slow-cooked beef, game birds, mushrooms, fine pork dishes, mature hard cheeses or traditional Piedmontese cuisine.
