On the Montagne de Corton, Domaine Bonneau du Martray embodies one of the most prestigious expressions of the Côte de Beaune, with an exceptional heritage devoted to the Grand Crus Corton-Charlemagne and Corton. Sought after for its crystalline, long-lived white wines, the domaine produces precise, saline and deeply Burgundian wines shaped by altitude and limestone.
Domaine Bonneau du Martray — The Majestic Radiance of Corton-Charlemagne
Located on the Montagne de Corton, in Pernand-Vergelesses, Domaine Bonneau du Martray holds a unique place in the landscape of the Côte de Beaune. Its vineyard heritage is devoted almost entirely to the great terroirs of Corton-Charlemagne and Corton, two Grands Crus that rank among Burgundy’s noblest expressions.
The domaine is above all renowned for its Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a white wine of rare purity, celebrated for its tension, mineral depth and exceptional ageing capacity. Since its acquisition by Stanley Kroenke in 2017, the estate has continued on a path of exacting standards, in keeping with its historic style: precision, restraint, Chardonnay brilliance and faithful expression of place.
A Burgundy of altitude, purity and great precision. Bonneau du Martray seeks long-lined, luminous wines deeply marked by limestone, where the natural power of Corton-Charlemagne is always held in balance by freshness, salinity and the elegance of Chardonnay.
History: a historic domaine devoted to Grands Crus
Bonneau du Martray is one of Burgundy’s most singular estates. Its history is intimately linked to the Montagne de Corton, where it farms some of the area’s greatest terroirs. Unlike most Burgundian domaines, its vineyard patrimony is based exclusively on Grand Cru appellations, giving it a status apart.
For many decades, the domaine built its reputation around a noble, precise and understated style. Corton-Charlemagne is treated here as a great wine for ageing, capable of expressing the verticality of the slope, the complexity of the soils and the depth of Burgundian Chardonnay.
Since 2017, the estate has been owned by Stanley Kroenke. This new chapter follows a path of continuity and greater precision, with particular attention given to parcel-based work, viticulture and the finesse of ageing.
Terroir: the Montagne de Corton and the Charlemagne climats
The domaine covers around 11 hectares on the Montagne de Corton, mainly within the climats En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne. These high-slope vineyards, with their western exposure, favour slow, regular and balanced ripening.
The soils combine limestone, marl, sand and more complex formations depending on the sector. This mosaic gives the wines a very distinctive architecture: dense yet never heavy substance, chalky tension, saline depth, hillside energy and great persistence.
Corton-Charlemagne expresses its full dimension here: a Chardonnay of great breed, at once ample, straight, mineral and capable of slowly transforming in the cellar over several decades.
Expression of place: Montagne de Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Chardonnay, limestone, marl, altitude, citrus, white flowers, warm stone, fine hazelnut and a long saline finish.
Bonneau du Martray signature: crystalline, precise and long-built white wines, with great limestone energy, discreet depth and exceptional ageing potential.
Viticulture and vinification: parcel work and measured ageing
The domaine follows an exacting viticultural approach, attentive to parcel precision and the natural balance of the soils. Vineyard work aims to preserve freshness, aromatic purity and the ability of the grapes to translate the nuances of each sector of the Montagne de Corton.
In the cellar, each lot is vinified separately in order to respect differences in soil, exposure and ripeness. Ageing takes place on fine lees, in barrels and larger vessels, with measured use of new oak. The aim is to support the depth of Chardonnay without ever masking the tension, salinity and clarity of the terroir.
Wine style
The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from Bonneau du Martray is defined by its balance between contained power and mineral precision. The wine offers aromas of citrus, candied lemon, pear, white flowers, fresh almond, fine hazelnut, warm stone and lightly smoky notes with age.
On the palate, the substance is ample yet taut, carried by noble acidity and a highly persistent saline finish. The Corton Grand Cru red, produced in more confidential quantities, expresses a structured, finely extracted Pinot Noir marked by red fruits, delicate spices and the limestone poise of the slope.
Emblematic cuvées
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: the domaine’s major cuvée and one of the great references for Burgundian Chardonnay. A crystalline, deep and saline wine, capable of ageing for many years while gaining complexity.
Corton Grand Cru Rouge: a rarer Pinot Noir cuvée, structured and elegant, offering a red expression of the Montagne de Corton, between red fruits, fine spices and a limestone frame.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne is one of Burgundy’s great white wines for ageing. Depending on vintage and storage conditions, it can evolve for 15 to 30 years, sometimes longer in large formats or in the most favourable vintages.
At the table, it pairs beautifully with lobster, langoustines, turbot, scallops, poultry in cream sauce, morel risotto, Burgundy cheeses, brown-butter cuisine and gastronomic mushroom dishes. The red Corton works well with roast poultry, veal, duck, feathered game, mushrooms and mature cheeses.
