Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 — Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Magnum 1.5 L
This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, presented in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the most classical and noble expressions of Burgundian Chardonnay. An emblematic estate on the hill of Corton, Bonneau du Martray is renowned for a Corton-Charlemagne of great straightness, mineral depth and remarkable ageing potential.
The 2008 vintage gives here a tense, crystalline and deeply structured wine, marked by vivid acidity, great precision and a finish of remarkable persistence. In magnum 1.5 L, evolution is slower than in a standard bottle, preserving more freshness, energy and aromatic finesse over time.
Terroir: the historic heart of Charlemagne
Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne comes from the western slope of the hill of Corton, in the historic heart of the Charlemagne climat. This singular exposure, receiving sunlight from late morning until evening, allows full ripeness while preserving natural freshness thanks to the air circulation around the hill.
The soils combine clay, marl, silt and limestone, forming a mosaic of nuances that contributes to the wine’s complexity. The upper parts bring crystalline brightness, floral notes and citrus; the mid-slope provides structure and grain; while the lower sections, richer in mineral elements, reinforce the power and depth of the Grand Cru.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous golden yellow with slightly evolved reflections, bright and deep. The magnum format helps preserve the wine’s brilliance and a relative sense of youth despite the age of the vintage.
Nose: noble and precise, with ripe lemon, citrus zest, fresh pear, white peach, almond, fine hazelnut, light honey, dried apricot, warm stone and a touch of toast. With aeration, nuances of white flowers, chalk, fine butter, sweet spices and dried fruits may appear.
Palate: straight, satin-textured and incisive, with ample substance yet perfect tension. The acidity of the vintage carries the wine with energy, while salinity, chalky grip and mineral persistence extend the finish. The whole remains powerful, pure and remarkably balanced.
94/100 — William Kelley, Wine Advocate
William Kelley describes the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 from Domaine Bonneau du Martray as one of the estate’s finest Corton-Charlemagne wines of the 2000s, marked by orange oil, fresh pear, honey, dried apricot, toasted notes and a satin-textured, incisive palate driven by lively acidity and chalky grip. Allen Meadows / Burghound awarded it a range of 92–95/100, highlighting its richness, freshness, mineral influence and an austere, pure and very long finish.
Expression of the 2008 vintage and the value of magnum
The 2008 vintage gives this Corton-Charlemagne a particularly classical expression: more vertical than solar, more tension-driven than generous, with structuring acidity and great mineral length. Today, the wine is beginning to reveal fine tertiary nuances, without losing its energy or precision. The magnum 1.5 L further enhances this impression of preserved freshness and slow maturation.
It can be enjoyed today after careful opening, yet it still retains fine potential for lovers of great Burgundian Chardonnays with more patina. Progressive opening is recommended, without excessive decanting, served around 11 to 12°C in order to preserve its tension, texture and mineral nuances.
In summary: a Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 from Domaine Bonneau du Martray in magnum 1.5 L, awarded 94 points by Wine Advocate, marked by lemon, pear, dried apricot, honey, hazelnut, toasted notes, vivid acidity, chalky grip and great mineral length.
Food pairings: lobster, langoustines, scallops, turbot, sole meunière, line-caught sea bass, Bresse chicken with cream, sweetbreads, veal with morels, aged Comté, mature Parmesan, noble mushrooms or gastronomic cuisine with buttery and iodine-driven notes.
