Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 — Bonneau du Martray (magnum, 1.5 L)

This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2008 from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, offered here in magnum, embodies one of the great expressions of Burgundian Chardonnay: a wine of altitude, tension and mineral depth. The 2008 vintage brings particularly vivid energy, chiselled acidity and an expression that is more vertical than solar.

Bonneau du Martray is historically associated with the hill of Corton and with one of the purest interpretations of the Charlemagne climat. Its Corton-Charlemagne does not seek immediate opulence, but rather a balance between power, freshness, limestone precision and slow bottle evolution. In magnum, this architecture gains further nobility, poise and ageing capacity.

The spirit of the wine

A great white Burgundy that is both ample and taut, built on citrus, fresh pear, yellow fruit, crushed stone, chalk, hazelnut notes and racy acidity. The 2008 vintage is one of precision, marked more by energy, salinity and length than by immediate richness.

Terroir: the historic heart of Charlemagne

Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne comes from the Charlemagne climat, at the heart of the Corton hill. This part of the Grand Cru follows the western slope of the hill and benefits from a rare exposure in Burgundy: the vines receive sunlight from late morning until sunset, while natural airflow between the neighbouring hills helps preserve freshness in the grapes.

The estate’s vineyard runs from the top to the lower part of the hill. This position crosses a true mosaic of soils: clay, silt, marl and different forms of limestone. The plots near the forest, at the top of the slope, bring a more crystalline, floral and lemon-driven expression. The mid-slope gives structure, grain and tension. The lower slope, richer in mineral elements, contributes power and foundation to the wine.

Terroir expression: citrus, white flowers, pear, limestone, chalk, salinity and great mineral tension.

With age: the lemony precision evolves towards orange, ripe pear, fine honey, dried apricot, hazelnut, toasted notes and a more chalk-driven minerality.

Tasting notes

Appearance: pale gold to light golden, with a natural evolution towards deeper reflections. In magnum, the colour may retain a fine visual freshness while showing the first noble signs of maturity.

Nose: precise, complex and still energetic, with orange peel, ripe lemon, fresh pear, white flowers, dried apricot, fine honey, hazelnut, fresh butter, crushed stone and a touch of perfectly integrated toasted oak. Subtle notes of noble reduction, flint or struck match may accompany the wine’s mineral character.

Palate: ample without heaviness, satin-textured, incisive and highly structured. The acidity of the 2008 vintage gives a racy, almost cutting backbone, while the terroir brings chalky grip, marked salinity and a long, pure, mineral finish. The wine combines yellow fruit, citrus, delicate dairy notes, dried fruit and limestone tension.

Aromatic profile

Citrus: ripe lemon, lemon zest, orange peel, lime.

Fruit and maturity: fresh pear, white peach, yellow fruit, dried apricot, fine honey.

Minerality: chalk, crushed stone, flint, salinity, limestone grip.

Evolution: hazelnut, toasted notes, light mocha, fresh butter, delicate dairy nuances.

Expression of the 2008 vintage

The 2008 vintage gives Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne a classical, taut and long-lined personality. Critical notes often highlight its chiselled fruit, energy, fresh acidity, austere minerality and impressive length. It is less immediate than some riper vintages, but more precise, more vibrant and closer to the ideal of a great white Burgundy built for ageing.

Today, the wine is entering an interesting phase of maturity, with aromatic evolution already perceptible without losing its tension. The magnum format reinforces this impression of relative youth and preserved freshness. It can be enjoyed now after careful opening, while still retaining ageing potential for lovers of more complex, mineral-driven Chardonnay.

In summary: a Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru of great precision, at once ample, chalky, saline and incisive, enhanced by the magnum format.

Dominant aromas: orange peel, lemon, pear, white flowers, dried apricot, fine honey, hazelnut, chalk, flint, toasted oak and a long mineral finish.
