Champagne Larmandier-Bernier — Biodynamic Precision, Chalky Purity and Terroir-Driven Champagne

Based in Vertus, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, Champagne Larmandier-Bernier stands among the world’s leading references for terroir-driven Champagne. Officially founded in 1971, the estate builds on a family winegrowing heritage dating back to the 18th century. Under the guidance of Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, the domaine embraced an early commitment to biodynamic viticulture, aiming to express the purest identity of chalk soils and individual villages, through minimal intervention and very low dosage.

Terroir and Vineyards of the Côte des Blancs

The estate covers approximately 18 hectares, spread across some of Champagne’s most renowned villages. Vineyards are planted predominantly on deep chalk soils, ideally suited to Chardonnay, the flagship grape of the domaine, bringing tension, minerality and long ageing potential to the wines.

  • Grand Cru villages : Cramant, Chouilly, Oger
  • Premier Cru : Vertus
  • Total surface : ~18 hectares
  • Vine age : many parcels over 50 years old

Biodynamic Viticulture and Living Soils

The vineyards have been biodynamically certified since 2003. No herbicides or synthetic products are used. Vineyard work focuses on preserving soil life, strengthening the vine’s natural balance and encouraging a transparent expression of terroir, with intentionally low yields.

  • Farming : certified biodynamic
  • Harvest : hand-picked
  • Philosophy : precision, energy and terroir expression

Parcel Vinification and Extended Lees Ageing

Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its identity. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts and take place in foudres, old barrels and stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is generally carried out. Wines undergo extended ageing on lees, with very low dosage, often Extra-Brut or Brut Nature, and minimal or no filtration.

  • Fermentation : indigenous yeasts
  • Vessels : foudres, barrels, stainless steel
  • Dosage : very low

Champagne Style — Precision, Chalky Minerality and Ageing Potential

Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes are defined by their purity, pronounced chalky minerality and exceptional clarity of terroir. Elegance takes precedence over power, resulting in gastronomic wines with remarkable ageing potential.

  • Profile : tense, precise, saline
  • Palate : focused, energetic, long finish
  • Cellaring : excellent ageing capability

Signature Cuvées

  • Latitude – Broad, expressive, from the southern Côte des Blancs
  • Longitude – Linear, mineral-driven Chardonnay
  • Terre de Vertus – Parcel-based Premier Cru
  • Vieille Vigne du Levant – Iconic old-vine Grand Cru Chardonnay
