LECLERC BRIANT — ÉPERNAY
Pioneer of biodynamics & contemporary expression of Champagne terroirs
Founded in 1872 in Cumières and established in Épernay in 1955, Leclerc Briant stands among Champagne’s most forward-thinking maisons. A true pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture as early as the 1960s, the estate forged a distinctive style: pure, vibrant Champagnes shaped by mineral energy, tension and clarity. Since the domaine’s rebirth in the early 2010s under Mark Nunnelly and Denise Dupré, Leclerc Briant continues to embody avant-garde ambition, combining rigor, precision and creative freedom.
Terroirs & Biodynamic Vineyard
The domaine farms around 14 hectares certified organic and biodynamic, complemented by grapes sourced exclusively from certified growers. The vineyards span high-potential terroirs including:
- Épernay — deep chalk, saline tension, precision,
- Cumières — warmer clay-limestone soils, fruit richness and texture,
- Hautvillers — finesse, floral tension, structural clarity.
Every parcel is farmed according to natural cycles: no chemicals, active microbial life, and a holistic balance between plant and mineral ecosystems. This meticulous approach results in wines that are straight-lined, aerial and deeply connected to place.
Philosophy: Avant-Garde Spirit & Living Energy
Leclerc Briant is part of the select group of maisons that embraced an alternative path long before it became fashionable. Its philosophy is built on:
- a deep energetic understanding of the vineyard,
- regenerative and respectful viticulture,
- a quest for raw, unadorned terroir expression,
- a strong experimental dimension.
This creative openness has led to innovative élevages — amphora, wood, concrete eggs — and striking projects such as underwater ageing, a symbol of the domaine’s pioneering spirit.
Vinification: Purity & Precision
Winemaking focuses on clarity and finesse, built upon:
- gentle pressings,
- spontaneous or minimally guided fermentations,
- extended ageing on fine lees,
- measured use of wood and alternative vessels,
- low dosages that highlight the mineral backbone,
- technical precision for a straight, lifted aromatic profile.
The result: Champagnes of great readability, combining tension, purity and profound resonance.
Wine Style
- marked minerality,
- pure, elongated aromatics,
- fine and refined textures,
- clean, vibrant freshness,
- a living, energetic tension typical of biodynamics,
- remarkable ageing potential.
These are living, luminous Champagnes, crafted to express the contemporary face of Champagne terroirs.
