Champagne Abyss 2017 — Leclerc Briant Brut Zéro, with gift box
This Champagne Abyss 2017 from Leclerc Briant, presented here with its gift box, is one of the most singular cuvées in Champagne. Produced as a Brut Zéro, with no added dosage, it expresses a pure, mineral and intensely maritime style, true to the experimental and biodynamic spirit of the house.
The distinctive character of Abyss lies in its underwater ageing: after its classic maturation, the bottle continues its evolution on the seabed off the coast of Ouessant, at around 60 metres depth. This immersion gives the cuvée a rare identity, combining chalky tension, iodine salinity, a calm texture and an almost telluric impression.
Terroir: Champagne, chalk and marine memory
Abyss is made from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, selected for their affinity with limestone terroirs. The idea behind the cuvée is built around a dialogue between Champagne’s chalk, an ancient marine memory, and the present energy of the ocean.
The 2017 vintage gives here a tense, precise and saline Champagne, whose Brut Zéro character highlights the purity of the material. The bottle with gift box reinforces the collector dimension of this rare cuvée: a wine for tasting, a curiosity in its own right and a distinctive piece for lovers of exceptional Champagnes.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale golden yellow with silvery reflections, showing a fine, delicate and precise mousse in an elegant, luminous style.
Nose: original and highly expressive, with ripe citrus, apple, peach, mango, white flowers, hibiscus, verbena, wet chalk, iodine, light smoke and a distinctly saline minerality.
Palate: tense, linear and finely textured, with a precise mousse, lively acidity and a mineral-saline finish. The wine stands out for its energy, purity, iodine dimension and the very particular maritime sensation that extends the palate with elegance.
95/100 — Falstaff
Falstaff describes Champagne Abyss 2017 Leclerc Briant Brut Zéro as a pale golden-yellow Champagne with a fine mousse and a highly distinctive aromatic profile. The review highlights iodine nuances, smoky minerality, mango, peach and apple, alongside floral touches of hibiscus and verbena. The palate is described as tense, firm and structured, with a core of yellow fruit, racy acidity and a mineral-saline finish.
Expression of the 2017 vintage
The 2017 vintage expresses itself here through precision, freshness and saline tension. The Brut Zéro style accentuates the wine’s straightness, while underwater ageing brings a rare tactile and maritime dimension. This is a gastronomic Champagne, more contemplative than demonstrative, to be served cool but not over-chilled in order to preserve its texture and iodine complexity.
In summary: a Champagne Abyss 2017 Leclerc Briant Brut Zéro with gift box, awarded 95 points by Falstaff, marked by salinity, iodine, smoky minerality, yellow fruit, chalky tension and the originality of its underwater ageing.
Food pairings: oysters, caviar, langoustines, scallop tartare, raw or marinated sea bass, lobster, crab, fine fish dishes, refined Japanese cuisine, sashimi, light tempura or fresh lactic cheeses.
