Côte de Beaune — Grands Crus & Exceptional Estates

At the heart of Côte-d’Or, the Côte de Beaune is home to some of the world’s most iconic Chardonnays and finely structured Pinot Noirs. With varied exposures and limestone-clay soils, the wines combine power, elegance and complexity.

Terroir, Geology & Style

A backbone of limestone (with clay and marl) gives rise to straight, saline whites with great aging potential. In red, Volnay and Pommard display fine tannins, floral and spicy aromatics, and a savoury length. Key villages: Puligny, Chassagne, Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, Aloxe-Corton.

Flagship Grands Crus

Whites: Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Charlemagne. Red: Corton. Hallmarks: precision, aromatic nobility, outstanding aging capacity.

Wine Styles

  • Chardonnay — ripe citrus, white flowers, fresh butter, hazelnut, wet stone; long, mouthwatering finish.
  • Pinot Noir — red berries, violet, gentle spice; silky tannins, lifted structure, balance between delicacy and intensity.

Iconic Producers

  • Domaine Leflaive — benchmark Puligny (1er Crus at Grand Cru level).
  • Maison Joseph DrouhinClos des Mouches (Beaune 1er Cru), both white & red, noted for purity and finesse.
  • Domaine Etienne Sauzet — outstanding Puligny whites & Grands Crus, remarkable precision and depth.

Historical Notes

A legacy shaped by monastic orders and merchant houses; the vineyard hierarchy of Côte de Beaune is part of the UNESCO-listed “Climats of Burgundy”.
