Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 2008 — Domaine Jean-Yves Bizot
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 2008 from Domaine Jean-Yves Bizot belongs to the rare and confidential world of great Pinot Noir from Vosne. Produced by a tiny domaine, sought after for its precision, low-intervention approach and extremely limited yields, it offers a fine, racy and deeply aromatic expression of the 2008 vintage: red cherry, rose petals, fine spices, damp forest floor, graphite, dried herbs, fresh truffle and a long, pure finish.
Jean-Yves Bizot, trained in geology before taking over the family domaine in 1994, produces wines in very small quantities that have become among the most sought-after in Burgundy. His style is based on very low-intervention vinification, often with whole clusters, and a search for transparency, perfume and texture. The 2008 vintage, fresh and precise, particularly highlights this airy, floral and mineral dimension.
A Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru of lace rather than force: perfumed, floral, spicy, slender and remarkably pure. The 2008 seduces through its fresh energy, delicate texture and long, dusty, floral and mineral finish. It is a wine of nuance, built on grain, precision and persistence rather than immediate power.
Terroir: Vosne-Romanée, clay-limestone soils and Côte de Nuits spice
Domaine Bizot works very small parcels in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru comes from vines situated within the environment of the village’s Premier Cru vineyards, on typical clay-limestone soils, where Pinot Noir expresses finesse, aromatic depth, tension and the sweet-spice signature so characteristic of Vosne.
In the glass, this terroir is not expressed through mass, but through perfume, precision and vibration. Limestone brings freshness, length and mineral sensation; clay gives flesh and grain; the climate of Vosne adds its unique complexity, combining red fruits, flowers, spice, dry earth, forest floor and lightly truffled notes with age.
Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, clay-limestone soils, red cherry, rose petals, Vosne spices, graphite, dry earth, forest floor and great mineral finesse.
Bizot signature: tiny production, very low-intervention vinification, perfumed expression, silky texture and a pure, long and precise finish.
Tasting notes
Appearance: light to medium ruby, with natural transparency and slightly garnet reflections linked to evolution. The wine retains an impression of finesse, brightness and delicacy rather than strong visual intensity.
Nose: delicate, refined and very Vosne, with red cherry, rose petals, small red berries, damp forest floor, fine spices, dry earth, graphite, dried herbs and a touch of fresh truffle. With air, notes of faded flowers, light smoke and fine pepper can add further aromatic complexity.
Palate: medium-bodied, supple, pure and very precise, with fine fruit, delicate tannins and the fresh acidity typical of the 2008 vintage. Flavours of cherry, small red berries, spice and forest floor extend into a long, complex, slightly dusty, floral and mineral finish. The whole favours elegance, textural finesse and persistence.
Fruit: red cherry, small red berries, wild strawberry, fine and luminous fruit.
Flowers and spices: rose petals, faded flowers, fine spices, fine pepper, Vosne perfume.
Evolution and terroir: damp forest floor, dry earth, graphite, dried herbs, fresh truffle, minerality.
Overall impression: rare, silky, floral and precise Pinot Noir, driven more by grace and length than by power.
Expression of the 2008 vintage
The 2008 vintage in Burgundy is marked by freshness, acidity, precision and an expression that is more vertical than solar. For a domaine such as Bizot, the year highlights aromatic purity, floral notes, fine spice and mineral length. The wine is less fleshy than in a warm vintage, but more chiselled, more vibrant and more delicate.
Today, this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 2008 is in a fine phase of maturity, balancing still-present red fruit, tertiary complexity and fresh tension. A well-preserved bottle can offer great emotion, provided it is opened delicately and aerated with restraint in order to preserve its perfume and fragile texture.
In summary: a rare and refined Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 2008, marked by the freshness of the vintage, the finesse of the terroir and the intensely perfumed signature of Jean-Yves Bizot.
Dominant aromas: red cherry, rose petals, small red berries, fine spices, damp forest floor, graphite, dried herbs, fresh truffle, dry earth and a long mineral finish.
