Rosso del Bepi Veneto IGT 2016 — Giuseppe Quintarelli
This Rosso del Bepi Veneto IGT 2016 from Giuseppe Quintarelli is one of the most distinctive wines of Valpolicella. Produced only in certain years, when Amarone is not released according to the family’s exacting standards, Rosso del Bepi embodies a deep, patient and intensely personal expression of the Quintarelli style.
Made from a Venetian red blend built around Corvina, this 2016 offers a broad, complex and vibrant profile. The wine combines the richness of appassimento, deep dark fruit, remarkable freshness and the quiet nobility that has made Quintarelli’s greatest bottles so revered.
Terroir: Valpolicella Classica, Negrar and the Quintarelli signature
The Giuseppe Quintarelli estate is located in Valpolicella Classica, on the hills around Negrar, near Verona. These well-ventilated slopes, marked by limestone soils, allow slow ripening and fine preservation of freshness, essential to balance the natural richness of partially dried grapes.
In 2016, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico was not produced by the Quintarelli family. Part of the fruit intended for that great cuvée was therefore directed into Rosso del Bepi, giving the wine remarkable depth, density and complexity, while retaining more lift and drinkability than a classic Amarone.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red, dense and luminous, with garnet reflections and a visual intensity that suggests concentration, maturity and ageing potential.
Nose: complex and captivating, with black cherry, sour cherry, plum, blackberry, ripe red fruits, cocoa, dark chocolate, liquorice, tobacco, incense, sweet spices, eucalyptus and an elegant balsamic nuance. With aeration, notes of dried rose, violet, fine herbs, cedar and blood orange may appear.
Palate: broad, velvety and deeply structured, with generous substance held perfectly in balance by lively freshness and integrated acidity. The dark fruit remains intense, the tannins are silky, and the finish stretches long across spice, cocoa, cherry, tactile minerality and a slightly saline trace.
95/100 — James Suckling
James Suckling describes the Rosso del Bepi 2016 from Giuseppe Quintarelli as a refined wine marked by black cherry, elegant spice, incense and eucalyptus. He highlights a supple attack, full body, velvety tannins, lively but integrated acidity and a long persistence of cherry and spice. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, awarding it 94/100, also notes that the fruit from the Amarone not produced in 2016 was incorporated into this cuvée, reinforcing its impression of depth and complexity.
Expression of the 2016 vintage
The 2016 vintage gives Rosso del Bepi a particularly compelling personality: less solar than a classic Amarone, yet deep, energetic and remarkably complex. The wine brings together dark fruit, cherry, spice, cocoa, balsamic freshness and a velvety texture, with a tension that balances the richness of appassimento. Already impressive, it still has fine ageing potential.
In summary: a rare and emblematic Rosso del Bepi 2016 from Giuseppe Quintarelli, awarded 95 points by James Suckling, marked by black cherry, spice, incense, cocoa, balsamic freshness, velvety tannins and a depth worthy of the estate’s greatest cuvées.
Food pairings: braised beef, roast lamb, game, duck with sweet spices, truffle risotto, polenta with mushrooms, osso buco, mature cheeses, aged Parmesan or generous Italian cuisine built around slow-cooked meats.
